Sirius or XM?
Would appreciate hearing which you prefer and, most importantly, why... trying to decide which to buy.
Thanks.

XM OR SIRUS
My personal preference is xm. I have run xm for a couple of years now and love it. I have it in both cars and in the home. I have never used the sirus.

Pay radio . . . what a concept!
When visting the "lower 48" and driving more than my usual "one lap of the island" one of the great pleasures is scanning the FM dial for different regional stations. If for some reason, I can't get a good signal from anyone, then I switch over to my iPod with the iTrip and I'm good for at least 5 hours of "my programming." Does anyone travel on the road/listen to radio enough to make the intial radio purchase and the subscription fee work out? |

Well, don't really know how long/far one has to travel to make it "work out", but I drive the same route back and forth to work daily... which averages about 4.5 hours... and the local stations around here are pretty poor with the % of ads to music steadily increasing... so, yea, I'll happily pay for the radio/subscription... but, that's just me.
Just trying to figure out which service to buy...

xm radio
To some, there may need to be enough justification to purchase the sat. radios. In my case, whether I am driving to work(30minutes one way) or just going to the grocery store, I have my radio on constantly while in the car. It is just nice to finally get music without having to listen to all the gazillion car advertisements. Plus, if I am in the mood for a certain type of music, I can go and listen to just that type. So, if you hardly ever listen to the radio, it might be hard to justify the cost of the unit plus the monthly fee, but if you are like me, I always have some form of music on whether it be radio, cd, minidisc, etc. Hope this helps.

Like most people, I've never spent any length of time with the other, but I love my Sirius. I got the tuner free with a Kenwood headunit, and then antena was $50 or less. It was a decent deal I thought.
I drive a lot, spend a lot of time on long trips, and it's absolutly, completly, priceless. I don't own a television, so this is my link to the goings on in the world. CNN, MSNBC, NPR, BBC, the comedy channels, those alone are worth the cost to me. The music is good, depending on what you want to hear, but I truly listen to stuff like the above more than anyting else. When I want music, I have a Music Keg with 150some odd CD's worth of stuff to pick from.. Now THAT was pricy..

I have XM and would not trade it for anything in the world. I almost never listen to cd's any more and I NEVER listen to standard radio.
There is nothing better than Satellite radio on long trips. There is variety and you know where to find it. Commercial free - gotta love it and I gladly pay for it.

I went with XM, it had programing that a like, I thought sirius had to many sports channels. I also found that sirius cost more and for what? I opted for the 3 year pre-pay to keep cost down. I have the roady it nice and protable but, navigational controls are a bit small.

I had both XM and Sirius in the same car. They both are a bit playlisted but incredibly better than the garbage that is FM, well worth the money with either service even if you have a short commute. Even if you dont dig the music there are tons of talk/news channels, comedy, variety, etc etc.
If I had to choose between the two I would choose XM, I find their reception is near flawless. Sirius had decent reception, but not great. Plus XM has much better hardware.

Does anyone know what teh sampling rate for either is?
They said minidisc was "CD Quality" and obviously it isn't and for the most part neither is MP3. I would be interested in knowing if either of them has better sound quality...also I heard one of them was in financial distress...anyone have current news on this? |

XM seems to have superior technology
I live in the city where XM is headquartered - They get written up in a lot of the local business journals and news publications. All the info I have read is that they are a step ahead of sirus in technology. Sirus follows them by about 9 months both on the ground and on the satelite.
And now that XM has Traffic and Weather for the major cities - I really like that. Every time I think 11 bucks (that is what it works out to with my local taxes) is too much - I listen to them for a day - and realize what a great product and service they are producing. - Now to get XM in my car and truck!

Last week I was on the east coast and Hertz provided a Sirius equiped Camry. The programming was great, I barely recall a "repeat" song on any of the channels I tuned into and the commercial free format is great, although their channel ID spots do get repetitious. It performed well in the canyons of Manhattan, but if you're going slower than 40 mph under a parkway or turnpike overpass or a toll booth (man I wish rentals had EZ Pass), the data buffer isn't big enough to avoid that annoying loss of signal.

If not mistaken there are units now available that
can receive both. A visit to your local stereo shop would confirm or dismiss this. Louis. |

I've had XM for 10 months in my SLK, as part of the Alpine head unit i had installed. I've recently cancelled my subscription, but not because of any satisfaction issues. I recently purchased an ipod that's connected directly to the Alpine unit, so I've had no use to listen to satellite radio anymore. I'd go with XM though, since I think they were first to market with the service. Unless you're a die hard fan of Howard Stern and Eminem, who have agreed to host their own channel on Sirius.

Sirius here in my 190E and getting a portable type reciever for the W203 C230K Coupe as well. I have a Clarion Deck in the 190E and Bose in the W203 so I am keeping the stock system and just doing an FM modulated one in the W203.
