I've searched and searched -I've gotta ask about my 95 E420 front door speaker cutout

Hi all... I searched the archives to no avail. Please help!

My 95 E420 with stock stereo front door subs/speakers recently stopped working. There were no warning signs, they just stopped without so much as a "pop" or "crackle". The dash speakers work just fine, but they are just tweeters and there is no bass. The rear speakers also work fine, but there is no bass from them either. Music sounds like an old AM radio.

If I have the stereo on for >30 minutes, sometimes the front door subs start working again (without any drama, they just turn back on). All is then good and the stereo sounds 100%. Sometimes this never happens despite me wiggling/fiddling around with the various stereo components.

Any expert willing to give me a starting place to look? What has me confused in the inperceptible nature by which the door subs/speakers turn on and/or off... It seems to quiet to be a bad amp or connection.

Please help this noob!

Ed

sounds like it could be the factory amp....

May be time to replace it.

The door subs have a sub crossover wired intot hem that is inside the door sub boxes you would have to remove the doorpanel to get the sub boxes out, then cut the sealant ont hem to open them to get to the sub crossovers. perhaps those have gone out, but it sounds more like its the factory amplifier that went bad on you, or could be a faulty wire somewhere.

Where is the amp?

Alon,

Thank you for the help!

it is definatly no the subs themselves, most likely the amp as you suggested. Where is the amp anyway? Is it built into the stero unit or seperate?

thanks !

Slightly off topic.....sorry

Alon,

Are you aware of any speakers that are a drop in fitment for the existing door speakers? I don't want to cut or modify anything including the speaker pods but I want to improve the overall sound quallity. I also want to maintain my existing amps and headunit. New OE door speakers cost $111.00ea and that includes the entire pod. Better to stick with OE or do you have a better solution?

You also mentioned that the door speakers have a built in crossover, I noted the other day that I get some midrange from the speakers which sounds horrible. Is it the crossover point that is too high or is it a possible bad crossover?

Thanks for your help!

Not in the trunk

Thanks again, Alon.

I looked in the trunk and couldn't find any noticable amps - would it be under any carpet? mounted vertically like the antannae motor?

Thanks, Ed

it should be int he trunk perhaps behind a panel.

Afshin, aftermarket speakers in 6 1/2 will drop in, but the back of the plastic enclosure in most cases will need to be cut out to accomodate the bigger magnet.

As far as speakers go, if you don;t want to cut the back out enough for the magnet, then you need to find some shallow depth speakers.

The door subs produce low range, that includes some of the voice, but not much. once you opent hose boxes you will see the crossover.

I opted to take mine out before changing the speakers, because I wanted some midrange up front as I only have tweeters in the dash pods.

I like infinity speakers crisp and clean, and they do have a shallow mount speaker.

if you are going to replace them, remmeber most speakers are 2 way, so if you just want a woofer, then you need a component set with a seperate tweeter so you can use just the woofer part of it.

just remmeber if you want to do the speakers that the boxes were designed specifically for the speaker that's in there, most aftermarket speakers will be too deep for the boxes, so cutting is necessary. but they will sound good.

Look into some shallow mount speakers.

Alon
