w202 removal of sheet metal between trunk/rear seat...?
Awhile back I installed a Infinity Basslink in the trunk of my '97 C230 bolted to the bottom of the rear deck with the sub firing up through an apx. 6" speaker hole that was for a high-end stereo option, but was left empty for my no-options vehicle. The sub has a woofer firing directly up through the previously mentioned hole in the rear deck, as well as a passive woofer firing directly down (I'm still not sure why...?).
I was very happy with the sound, which is perfect for everyday listening, but I crave more bass for rap music, etc. I know that the sub has more potential than I can hear with my current setup. I am considering cutting a hole in the sheetmetal that seperates the trunk from the rear seat where the armrest is in an effort to increase the bass within the cabin. To clarify, this would create a hole behind the armrest into the trunk, which many cars have to accomodate skis, etc. My questions are, does anyone know how well this would affect my bass? I would assume it would be an improvement, but I tend to get a bit nervous when I have to get out the sawzall. Also, would cutting a large hole in this panel cause any structural problems? I wouldn't think that it would considering the amount of the panel surrounding the area that would remain, but it can't hurt to ask, right? If so, I would have no problem welding in supports. In general, any thoughts, comments, fears? Thank you for your time, and sorry for the long post. -Vonn |

I assume your car does not have the optional skibag... still there is no need to saw through anything b/c the opening is already patterned (or at least it is on my 95 c280) and all you need do is hit it pretty hard with a mallet and it will break off... you can then file any sharp edges..... all that said this mod is pretty common among both m/b and bmw owners b/c our trunks are very well insulated...
