Consol mount for a 5 disc Blaupunkt changer in W126 project (prev double din post)

I am going to buy a Blaupunkt CD receiver and 5 disk changer. They are both single DIN units, about 7"W X 2"H X 7.25"D each. Looking at the size of the opening under the stock single DIN radio mount in the console, where the ashtray assembly is, I'm wondering if there is enough depth to mount the 5 disk player right under the space for the radio. It looks like if I trim the top off the storage tray, I might get enough vertical clearance. Width is, of course, no problem, but what about the depth, allowing for the slight angle of the lower unit in the console? (85 450SE)

Also, since no one replyed to my earlier post about speaker options, I'll update here that I got 2 Sony 4" X 6" speakers locally (XS4624) that look like hey'll fit nicely in the rear shelf. I'm still wondering whether the Eclipse or MB Quarts are worth the money.

EDIT UPDATE: I FINISHED THE PROJECT, DOCUMENTED BELOW

Quick update on the double DIN idea

Well, after checking the console out, it probably isn't worth it. The hard plastic duct work to the rear seat area vent won't let the depth of the unit exceed about 5 1/2", and the one I'm getting is about 7 1/4" deep.
I could cut this and remove it, but I think a better plan is to make a custom box to fit the console tray, between the front seats. This will let the CD changer face forward, and should allow easy CD insertion/removal, especially if I angle it up a bit. I have some scrap blue vinyl that matches the leather quite close and an old 70's console too, also blue.
This is a great spring project. I'll post pictures later if anyone's interested in the idea. I won't have to go into the trunk to load CD's, get to preserve the console (so I can remove it all someday), and won't fill the glovebox either.

Look for the center console box from a W126 model with passenger side airbag. It might give you the structure you need to mount the changer with minimal fabrication. The console has a nice wood tambour (sp?) door.

Project completed - consol CD changer mount

Well, I spent Saturday making up an extension to the CD HU to changer cord, and Sunday/Monday night doing the consol mounting box. Not to crowd the forum with too much, I'll post a few pics (worth 1000 words each, as the saying goes).
First is the basic box, fab'd from a piece of scrap and 2 cages, sitting on a couple of risers scavenged from an old fiche machine (never throw anything away, you never know when you'll need it).

Consol mounting project

Next is a blurry (sorry) image of the Blau changer in the box, to which I contact cemented some scrap vinyl cut from an old MB rear seat cover.

Next is the unit upside down, shows how the risers are welded to the cages. The vinyl tucks neatly at the front between the outer shell and the cage.

Consol mounting project

Here's the unit in the car. I made up a new carpet for the consol from a scrapped floormat, as it's cut narrower to fit between the risers and I wanted to be able to put everything back to stock later. The unit screws into the consol foam.

Consol mounting project

Rear seat view, showing the cord going to the HU, and the little button drilled to fit over the nut for the mount strap. I made up a small 1/8" ply with foam and vinyl to finish the rear.

Consol mounting project - last shot

Here's the HU, Blaupunkt Tokyo RDM169. BTW, changer is a 5 disc Blaupunkt IDC A09. Together, they make a dynamite set-up, and it sounds fabulous! It will take some time to learn all the functions, but that's a fun project too. I ended up putting Eclipse speakers in front (ES8462E), 4"X6", and they rock, nice highs and good bass for the size. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the project documentary.
