Radio error code!!!
I own a 1992 Mercedes 300se. This car sat in a garage for about 2 and a half years before I got to it. There are several problems that I am attempting to fix. First things first, I need a radio in my car!! I waited for the 'wait' on the radio display to turn into 'code' and it took the code in fine. But, it still doesnt work! I now get an 'E 3' error code when I turn it on. I went to the delear and they said either something has to be replaced or that cd changer wiring is bad. In an attempt to get the radio working I unplugged the cd changer. Now, i get an 'E 2' error code. I need some help. The dealrship also said that the problem could have been caused by the fact that the battery has not been connected to the car for a long period of time. He claimed that there is a "mini-battery" type thing that the radio uses that has died due to lack of power. I have located the 2 other peices of the radio in the trunk passanger side of the car behind the panneling. I dont know what to do now. The dealership requests too much money from me. I went to purchase a new radio receiver but the electronics store told me that the cd changer in the trunk may not work if I install it. So i'm stuck! The CD changer in the trunk is the becker silverstone 980 10-disc model. And the radio receiver is a becker silverstone grand prix, I beleive. I trully do not know what to do now, anyeone with any experiance on how to help me or advice please reply. Thank you very much for your patience in reading this message and if you can help me, I thank you in advance.

well they're right about the internal battery...
and they're right about the error codes (see below) "E2"or "E3" (Without CD Changer) 1 Input Power to the RECEIVER UNIT (Trunk mounted) is missing, Check with volt meter to test for 12 volts 2 Fuse of the RECEIVER UNIT (Trunk mounted) is open, Replace it with 7.5 amp fuse. 3 The BUS CABLE (gray colored) that connects to HEAD UNIT(dash mounted) to the RECEIVER UNIT(trunk mounted) is not connected or is defective. 4 RECEIVER UNIT(trunk mounted) is defective. "E2 or "E3" (With CD Changer) 1 Input power to RECEIVER UNIT (Trunk mounted) is missing, Use a voltmeter to test for 12 volts 2 Check the RECEIVER UNIT for an open fuse and replace with 7.5 amp 3 Input power to the CD CHANGER (Trunk mounted) is missing, check with volt meter to test 12 volts 4 BUS CABLE (gray colored) is defective or disconnected, 5 CD CHANGER is defective, Disconnect the CD CHANGER from the HEAD UNIT, if the E2 code disappears, Replace the CD CHANGER, 6 RECEIVER UNIT (Trunk mounted) is defective. I hope this helps you trouble shoot this a little now then, if you don't want to bother with the factory setup, with a $200 budget you can get a new aftermarket in dash cd player installed, and forget about it.... ps, you on LI too?

First off, thanks for your reply and yes I live on long island. I did consider buying a new head unit, but supposedly, the cd changer would then be incompatible. Unless ofcourse, I wanted to buy a new becker silverstone radio for which I would have to empty my bank acount and maybe sell off a few fingers to be able to afford. I am going to attempt to check all the things you talked about. You mentioned the internal battery? Would that be included in one of the things you have listed or is that a separate issue and could be solely at fualt for my dilemma?

well I assume you took it al rallye, and yes the cd changer would be incompatible with an aftermarket headunit... go over some of the things I listed in the previous post, like plugging, and unplugging the changer, check all the related fuses and post your results... the battery they mentioned is an interal component of the radio.... if the radio is at fault and you really wanna fix it then I suggest you contact becker of NA and sent them the radio for repair... the becker 1432 is a two piece radio, head unit at the front, connected to a receiver at the back.... but like i said before the first thing to check (especially since the car has been sitting for so long) are the fuses for the audio system... take all of them out and check them... they may just have some corrosion on them...
p.s cool I'm also on LI...

There's a fuse in the receiver in the trunk, make sure the fuse is OK.

Becker
If you unplugged the changer that could be at least part of your problem since the output of the radio (dash) is routed thru the changer and then to the tuner (trunk) part. If you want to remove the changer you must pull apart the cable and plug into the tuner. The right angle connector from the front plugs into the tuner. when installing it goes the reverse cable from CD tuner jack goes to tuner, cable removed from tuner is plugged into extension and goes to frontgerat on CD
The whole setup is unique, the changer is no longer available the radio and CD can be rebuilt by Becker |

Removed CD Player. Problems
Peter and Others,
I removed my factory CD changer from the trunk of my '92. Now the radio doesn't operate, nor, curiously (to me) do the power one-push down windows and the power door locks. Are these conditions related? How should I proceed? Thank you. Bob

I found this thread just in time, as I just re-installed the head/amp/tuner in my 92 300TE. Powered it up, entered the code, and got an error E2.
According to one of the earlier posts in this thread, some of the potential reasons why the system throws an E2 is due to no power to the RECEIVER UNIT (next to the rear washer fluid bottle in a 300TE). Don't just go out and grab your voltmeter, first look at fuse C. If C is missing or blown (my mechanic pulled mine to deal with a locking controller issue), you won't have power back there, hence the E2 code. Putting the fuse back in C fixed it all for me. And there was much rejoicing. Chris |
