what are the very top SQ subwoofers?

im starting to shift my interests from trying to set off car alarms with huge bass to having a system thats just extremely clean sounding...

i just bought a kenwood KDC-PS900 cd player, which is a unit used for many SQ competition cars...i also have a Clarion 7 band in-dash EQ...im still running the four Alpine and MB Quart 4x6's in the stock locations, and thinking about custom installing some kick panels in the floorboard for some 6.5in midbass, maybe some Q series MB Quart.....i have 2 amps, one is a MTX thunder6304 and the other is a MTX thunder 81000d

heres my question...what are the very top subwoofers out there for sound quality? id like to get either two 10's or one 12" subwoofer....whatever i get will have about 750watts pushing them

thanks in advance for the help
dave

only an opinion, not based on SQ comp or anything, but you owe it to yourself to audition McIntosh's car-fi lineup. truely amazing stuff.

ive heard some mcintosh setups and the sound is just amazing, very clean...the only downside is that mcintosh knows this and they charge for it accordingly...

im looking more for something i can use with what amps i have...i was thinking some infinity kappa perfect 10's would match up with my amp nice....focal stuff is nice, too

a side question....should i look for a sub with a really high sensitivity rating? from the specs of a lot of sub ive seen it seems like the higher the rating the more geared toward SQ the sub is...and the lower rating subs are more SPL geared

Cerwin-Vega is very nice...not overdone.

has anyone used this cd player? ive never had any kenwood stuff, but this one looks like it might do nicely for what i want...if youve used this or heard one let me know what you think of it

depends on how much u are willing to pay. some people say alpine, jl, infinity are good (i have an infinity myself) others will not settle for anything less than Focal.

Hi Dave.

Check out Boston Acoustics.
They have nice stuff,but aren't
cheap.
Also check out the kicker solobarics,
the 10" easily handle 750 watts and
sound great in a small sealed box.

If you like some that are cheaper then
try Planet audio or Audiobahn.

Louis.

I'm looking for speakers/sub for my car too. I don't mean to be a grouch or anything, but this is the thing I don't like about car audio....you ask 20 people and you will get 20 different answers. There's no "final answer", best, or even general consensus like many other things regarding our MBs.

well i think similar to most things in life: Expensive=Better. so if u want a good subwoofer then get an expensive one :)

for me i go with Clarion, Alpine, Nakamichi, JL, Boston Acoustic, Cervin Wega, Kicker, Blaupunkt and such. this is because it falls in my price range.

I stay away from: Sony, Pioneer (maybe not the premier ones), Kenwood, AudioBahn (maybe they are good), and other cheaper brands.

ofcourse this is my opinion and i am in n way an expert. i just remember shoping around and i didn't like those brands for a number of reasons.

for my car i have a clarion HU (top end of 2002, no onboard amp), infinity rear, JL front, Infinity Sub (1 12"), alpine sub amp and an older sony XM for the speakers.

I highly recommend infinity for speakers. my 2 way sounded better than my JL components :)

I'll second Infinity for good cheap speakers. Their newer C.M.M.D. (ceramic metal matrix diaphram) drivers are great if your not looking to spend a lot and want decent sound. I do find their tweeters to be VERY bright, and a little "too much" for my taste in sound. Boston has home great budget minded equiptment and you can never go wrong with the MB Quart interiors. Alpine V12 amps are great for their money (I still run an MRVT-747 4 channel for my 6.5's). I like their decks as well. Eclipse makes a good deck, although the alpines seem to edge them out in direct price point comparisons. mbtjc hit it right on the head though. get out their and audition these set ups. Only you can decide what kind of sound suits you best. As least know one's brought up Bose....

JL W7, Image Dynamics IDMAX, and Elemental Designs, and Brahma are all very nice SQ setups. You can properly house one 12 and have it sounding better than 2 10'rs or even 2 12's. From what I've learned it all comes down to the install.
-Just a few more options for you to look at.

mbtjc 04-26-2004 10:05 PM

JL W7=$$$$$$$$$$$ But I guess like everything else you get what you pay for.

Yea JL subs always sound good with all kinds of music.
