Have a 1994 S500, and the power antenna just stopped working.
I can pull the mast itself up and down by hand, and hear the motor run for 6-8 seconds when I turn the radio on/off, but they are definitely not connected.
I am guessing the motor-to-mast cable is broken, but can I just buy that, and how difficult is it to replace??

Thanks, Barry

The mast is replaceable. Probably a dealer item. Possibly Hirschmann may have the part as well. If the cable is broken, you may have to get some help fishing it out of the motor assembly.

Agree with Jeff that the plastic "tail" attached to the mast is probably broken.

With other Hirschman's, I was able to remove the unit from the car, take the cover off, and remove the remains of the "tail." You can then put it back in the car and install a replacement mast.

If it turns out you need additional repair, contact Palo Alto Speedometer - you can find them at hemmings.com.

If you have some basic tools and the time, it's an enjoyable repair.

If you don't fix it, suggest disconnecting the power so that no further damage occurs.

The dealers, I am confident, will want to sell you a whole new antenna unit and labor to replace - proably $600-700.

Good luck.

Chuck

In my dads '93 500, we have had 4 of these replaced in the last 3 months, the dealer keeps replacing them but they keep breaking.

It is begining to get very irritating

I know this doesn't help, i just wanted a moan.

On mine, the little tab that contacted the spring broke off. I super glued it and put a screw down it and it worked twice before it broke again. I can't find anywhere to get the new gears either. They used to be available, but not anymore from what I was told. If anyone knows where to get one, let me know.

I thought a Hirschman antenna was only about $150 or so. Did you check any car stereo shops?

Thanks to all for your responses.
I think I'll go ahead and order the mast and fix that bad boy.

I'm telling you, open it up first and make sure that gear isn't broken. You don't want to waste your money on a mast you don't need.

Take a look in Hemmings, or The Star. There are plenty of sources for Hirschman. Palo Alto speedometer can fix bad gears if that is the problem.
