123 200T Speakers
Hello all!
I am in the process of "upgrading" the speakers of the T. Aside from budget constraints, questions is, can I still have quality audio without modifying the existing speaker mounts? What type and size of speakers would produce that clear yet bass-y sound without having to make new holes or modifications? I'm not into those loud, window-down type of volume but I would like the speakers to produce that clear sound even when the volume's high. Is it an absolute rule that the speakers should have enough "air space" at it's mounting to be able to do this? In that case, I will really have a problem with the rear speakers. I am biased though, towards using the existing mounts (the ones at the roof near the rear gate). I've bypassed the OTM fader (the one found near the power windows switch). I'm using the head unit to control the fader and balance of the sound. Your suggestions will be appreciated, especially since I am not an audio expert. Have an excellent day! |

Hi Mgsumner.
The front and rear speakers are an odd size 4" or 10.2 cm. What I would do is to buy some nice but not to expensive speakers and then also invest in a powered subwoofer. This will get you the bassy sound your looking for. The speakers, even if you buy good ones will never produce any kind of audible bass since they just are to small. As mentioned before just buy some nice ones and also get some bass blockers to reduce the bass going to them, then add the powered subwoofer. Louis. |

Thanks Louis!
Is the 4" speaker that hard to find? Well, I know its bordering on dumb but i do have to ask what you meant by good speakers? I've heard there are tweeters, woofers and subwoofers, mid-range and full-range speakers... Which one should I get? For all fours? And uh, really, I do not know what powered subwoofer means! Does it mean that it has it's own power supply? Do I have to install a separate amp for that? Obviously, I'm a real newbie. -mg |

Well the problem is that the speaker isn't exactly 4" it is a little bigger. Some Pioneer speakers will drop in but I would take a speaker with me when shopping for new ones, this way you can match them to . Yes, you could get component speakers but then you need to find an extra mounting area for the tweeter, since the 4" midrange speaker will go into the stock location. For the rear I would just go with full range speakers. Powered subwoofers have their own amplifier build in, you only have to run a power wire from the battery and splice into the rear speaker wires for the music signal to the sub And you need to find a good grounding location. T=Touring,it is German for stationwagon. For the European market MB had 2.0 liter gasoline and diesel engines. They also had a 2.2 gasoline and diesel(not sure about this) Here in the US the smallest engines where the 2.3 gasoline and the 2.4 diesel. Louis. |
