Ashtray/radio removal '91 300e

Am trying to remove the old radio... have removed the (removable) ashtray part, and unscrewed the 2 screws at the back. Ashtray unit feels looser, but will not come out.

I'm reading on some older posts that I have to remove the center console...has anyone done this before and could they please enlighten me on the radio removal?

It was sooo much easier on the '79 240D....Thanks.

Remove the front half of the carpet in the center console tray. Easiest way is to try to slide the forward edge back a bit until you can pull it up.

Unscrew the single phillips screw.

Place the gearshift in neutral (parking brake on).

On mid-late W124s (including '91), there is a plastic shift surround that prys out. Early W124s have a rubber one that does NOT.

Lift up from the rear, be careful about popping out the switches, and slide back slightly.

That should free up the ashtray. Be careful prying off the electrical connector for the cig lighter, the spade connection is easily bent.

Thumbs up thanks, anthonyb...

Saved me a lot of time...took about 7 minutes, could have done it in about 3, but was trying to be very careful about not breaking anything. Without your post, I could have spent HOURS on this....

Just wanted to add, once the ashtray was out, two clips on each end (underneath the radio) need to be released, when pulling the radio out (all at the same time)...one almost needs an extra hand (luckily my son is home on vacation)...

Now for all those wires....
