126 alternator upgrade with v-belt
i need to increase the output of my electrical system in my 300SD...im about to be running a hell of a system with over 1000 watts between both my amps...one of which is an MTX 81000d, which i believe draws in excess of 150 amps...ill be running both amps at 4 ohms so the demand for power wont be super incredible, but its going to suck a lot more juice than i got right now....
i read on another car audio forum that someone had bought an alternator that had a serpentine pulley and had a v-belt pulley put on it....could i do this with my car? what kind of options do i have for getting an output of around 160 or 170 amps? i suppose thats how much i need, maybe even more than that...i dont know...any advice on how much current i need would also be appreciated...thanks guys

also what about a battery? if i upgrade the alternator could i still use my stock battery? or should i go with something like an optima ?
one other thing, since im running 1/0 gauge wire for the system, should i beef up the wires going from the alt. to the battery ?

Hi.
This might interest you. "Alternator" 115 Amp Bosch AL129X works in 123s! If after all the following you still have problems you can have the alt rewound to have higher output. Also I don't think that your amps would draw 150 amps all the time. This would mean that you have them running at 100%. Music is transient,so you don't use full amlifier power all the time. I would upgrade the alt wires and also the ground wires(don't forget the one under the car!). Also install a capacitor as close to the amps as possible. 1 farad should be sufficient for the 1000W. This device stores electricity so that on bass notes the amps can draw power from it and not the charging system. I don't think there is a stronger battery than one for a diesel vehicle. Last but not least. Make sure you have an inline fuse on the power cable going from the battery to the amps. Mount it as close to the battery as possible, this will protect your car and system in case of a problem or accident. Oh. 1/0 gauge seems a little overkill. I would use 2 gauge from the battery to a distribution block then 8 gauge to the full range amp and 4 gauge to the sub amp. You might even be able to use 4 gauge and 8 gauge. Louis. Neoteric Biofuels (CA) offers an alternator upgrade for $399. I don't know which model they use, or what kind of bracket, but it puts out 155A.
From their site: "Higher output alternators, for VW and Mercedes (and available for Chevy, Ford and Dodge trucks 155A (amp) GM alternator, new, with internal voltage regulator, new zinc-plated mounting bracket, and new 2/0 gauge fine-strand welding cables - alternator to battery (with included 175A MegaFuse and fuse holder) and alternator to frame. A stock 5 cylinder Mercedes alternator is 70A, pre-Tdi VW's are similar." Their website is www.biofuels.ca If you get one, let me know how easy it is to install. |
