my two cents

about a month ago i was putting some oil in the engine... at some point, i somehow managed to drip a little on my door handle. i said, "ooh, what a nice, pretty black color!" so i spread it around on the handle... it still looks great.

i'd seen this thread before and soon after doing the motor oil thing (with only one handle) i really wanted to try the peanut oil on the balance of the trim. since i didn't have any around, i thought i'd try mineral oil... worked great!

After reading this thread I'm perplexed and intrigued at the same time. So instead of say using Black Magic for all of the interior vinyl surfaces, I can use some peanut oil instead?

Also I've used the Meguir's Trim detailer which looks nice on initial application but does not last. The peanut oil should lossen all of the dirt that is adhered to the various exterior surfaces and at the same time moisturize?

Sounds like things are getting rather "organic" when it comes to car care

ok i decided to jump onto this to fix up my grill. my $3.58 "mod" lol. well here is a before picture. im waiting half an hour for it to soak in. i am only doing one side so that you can compare to how it looks with the before and after shot. and you can see my reflection there. i parked too close to the garage so i had to lean in to the front so i can try and get most of the grill in the picture as possible. i would put on the handles, but there like leftover paint there as it is chipping. so im going to sand down the area first to smoothen it out, then ill put some oil on there. someone put oil on there dash to see if its safe

almost no smell. today was scorching hot here in west covina ( i would say about 90 degrees fahrenheit, 32.22 Celsius for you metric folks) and there was almost no smell. i drove her and it doesn't smell. but its only been a few hours. i tried taking a picture right now, but my camera is being nice to me today. ill try again in a few minutes. i only did the right side of the inserts and the bumper and some trim. the trim feels more plush and rubber-like instead of like plastic. i washed the car after and i still feel it. ill keep you guys updated as to how this comes along. i haven't tried putting it in the interior yet... i wonder if it will fog up the window....

As I understand it, the peanut oil should be applied before a wash. Any certain amount of time before it soaks in or is it instant?

im not sure about a certain time. this is what i did.. i started off by applying it to the right side to show you all a comparison. but when washing my car, i wanted to put on the left side ( which i did , i forgot i wanted to show you all the comparison) i accidently left it on for 2 minutes when i realized. the whole grill was wet, you should do it when it is nice and dry and if doing it to the grill , do it when its warm, i don't think temperature makes much of a difference though. here is a comparison shot. the lighter uglier gray on the left side is what it looked like. i put it on the bumper and it feels much better. oh and for the time, i left it on for 30 minutes. i think that was overkill though. i think at a certain point, it can't do much more.

Bought some peanut oil last night at the grocery store. Tried it on the trim on my door handles. Also my red and green LED cover for my locks was getting like a cloudy color, as if it were old or something. Wiped it with the peanut oil on a rag and it literally looks like new. Now the LEDs flash so bright I was amazed. I can't wait to detail the whole car with a clay bar, wax then the peanut oil.

Thanx Guys!

uhh.. i think you should do this so you don't have any excess oil . first apply the peanut oil and let it sit for a while, then when that is done, wash off the area so its not left so slimy, then go ahead and clay it... but then when you clay your gonna have to wash again... so if you follow this.. you might have a good day set out for washing your car

peanut oil WARNING!

Don't get greedy or lazy. Wash off that peanut oil after it has soaked in for a few minutes. I decided to let mine sit over night and it turns out the local critters love the stuff. Gnawed door handles and some claw scratches. I've got it all fixed up now.
I live in the city, but there are still skunks, racoons and the occasional possum.
I'm going to use mineral oil from now on.

Has anyone used peanut oil on their dash and other interior plastics?

Is this recommended?

I was thinking about using it on the dash of my E to keep things nice and moisturized. I want to prevent the infamous cracking dash that the w210's are known for...

Never used it on my dash but I did use it ( peanut butter) on my outside door handles and believe it or not it worked as good or better than Meguirers Natural Shine product. Besides Natural Shine I found that using a leather conditioner on the dash , steering wheel, did very well, too.

Peanut oil on rubber?

Anyone tried Peanut oil on the tyres?
Strictly on the side walls, of course.

It looks good for showing a car - but for everyday use (driving) you will be dissapointed after a day or so (dust + oil = )

SIDEBAR- don't use it on your dash, it get's a rancid smell
