Bumper touch up?
Used 92 500 SEL.
Bumper chip appeared. I assume it occured when car was parked and another car hit the bumper while parking. Bumper is gray, under color is yellow. Asked a repair shop to give an estimate and the quote was very high. Claimed that the bumper had been previously repaired by painting and that the paint used was wrong. Said I needed a new bumper and paint job. My guess is I can get it touched up for a few dollars. Your input is appreciated. |

I have a few paint dinks in my bumpers and recently put a nice slash in the plastic on the sides and doors. Mine is a 91 SD. I learned by searching on this board and elsewhere that there WAS a Duplicolor retail spray-can paint that matched perfectly (I am pretty sure it doesn't exist anymore). I bought the one shade they still make and it looks a little light; my other option is there's a paint store in town that'll custom match the color and put it in spray cans (a pint) for about $25. Anyway, you definitely can sand and paint the plastic.

If you are having paint formulated for your bumper, have them put a flexitive in the paint. It is used to keep the paint from becoming too brittle and subject to crazing and cracking due to plastic stretching from temperature changes. The paint shop will know what to do.
