During our weekend trip, we did find a very nice 300E. It did, however, have the beginning signs of corrosion around the lower door panels. Did not appear to be any major problem, and with proper attention, should be no long term problem. My question would be, other than taking the car to a body shop, how could I take care of this problem myself? It would appear it needs sanded, cleaned, primed, and repainted. But, to be perfectly honest, I'm just guessing here. Any and all responses and input would be greatly appreciated!

You could certainly stop the corrosion and prevent future corrosion yourself but, getting it to look original would be very difficult without a lot of specialized equipment and expertise.
If the car is going to be your "beater" as we would say in the south or your "snow car" as I used to say when I lived in Milwaukee, then go for it. But, if this is going to be a car that you will be proud of or want to resell then, I would have it repaired by a professional using Sikkens paints and materials.
Also, if the car is white it will be much easier to fix than if it is black. Black paint shows every little defect. Metallic paint can also be tough to match.

Bill has already addressed the "fix the corrosion" path of action quite well. You said "looked at" so I'm assuming you have not bought it yet. My advice, don't. There are too many nice 300E's out there without such problems that I wouldn't bother with one that had any defects that needed major intervention. Rust really isn't a problem for the W124's so you can probably find one that is free of such problems. If you were looking at a otherwise mint 190SL I might advise you otherwise but a 300E is too common and there are still too many really nice ones out on the market.
