There's been a lot of discussion about wax here. What about the soap. I look for one that claims to be harmless but that's the extent of it. Any recommmendations?

My all time favorite is Zymol. It has great wetting action and seems to provide more lubrication to the surface than other car wash solutions I have used. It does a good job helping to lift the dirt off the surface and gives nice sheeting action when rinsing. I use one capfull per wash bucket which seems to be sufficient to clean but, not too much so wax isn't removed. I have never had a problem with water spotting but, I always dry my car after washing anyway.

The Zymol is good, but the Meguiar's "mirror glaze" #00, yes zero-zero, should be pretty good as well. Overall I have to agree with Bill that the Zymol wash is the best.
