The chrome plates on the front and rear bumpers on my '86 420SEL have swirl marks in them when viewed in direct sunlight. Is there any way to remove the swirls? Thanks in advance.

You can try some "Flitz" metal polish. It might not eliminate the swirls 100% but it will improve the overall condition greatly. Be sure to use a 100% cotton cloth...

Are the swirls just visible or are they deep enough you can actually feel them?

Hope this helps...Lee

No, the swirls are just visible. They are not very bad, it just bothers me when it is in direct sunlight because the paint is so good. Where can I get Flitz?

Most ACE Hardware stores carry Flitz. Should be in a blue/silver box about the size of a toothpaste tube.

You can also find Flitz in larger grocery stores.

Quick note to augment the Flitz solution...
Whatever you use to apply and remove the flitz should be soft enough so that you will not risk adding further swirls. 100% Cotton terry or diaper should work fine. Do use your stained/tattered 100% rags though. Cleaning Flitz out of rags isnt' too bad, its the oxidation off the metal that can be stubborn. BTW, if we are talking about polishing the Magnesium intake off of a W210 V6 or V8 then use paper towels.

Enjoy...>Lee
