Dear All,
I've just got a new C200. After driving for two weeks, I washed the car and noticed the bonnet to be rough to touch. Probably minute particles of tar, sand, etc picked up from the road while trailing other cars. The problem is,they don't wash away with ordinary car shampoo. I'm thinking of using something like Amway tar & bug remover. What do you think?

Second question is, I've been using Armorall protectant for the vinyl, leather and other surfaces and it looks good. But most people recommend different products for different surfaces. Your opinion, please.
Regards,
Lou

The best thing to use for particles on the paint is paint cleaning clay. Try Clay Magic, which is available at Pep Boys and other automotive specialty stores. Be sure to spray a generous amount of the spray that comes with it or use Meguiar's Final Inspection to lubricate the surface prior to using the clay. Work a small area at a time. If you have never used clay before you will be amazed. The surface will be absolutely smooth when you are finished.

Do yourself a favor and quit using Armorall! It is NOT good for vinyl and is certainly not good for leather. I won't even use the stuff on my tires. The best cleaner/protectant for vinyl is Vinylex. Vinylex is also great for tires. Use Lexol cleaner and Lexol conditioner for your leather. Try to find the Lexol starter kit that includes a spray bottle of the Vinylex, Cleaner and Conditioner. You can probably find these locally or you can order on-line from http://autosupermart.com/

Lee has written several posts regarding clay, Lexol and Vinylex. Use the search function in the upper right hand corner of this page to find out more about the use of these products by searching on any of these words.

BTW, skip the spray lube that comes with the Clay Magic clay bar... You will be trying to remove the streaks for hours. (ask me how I know) Use the blue Clay Magic clay but with Meguiar's #34 Final Inspection as the lubrication medium.

Just be VERY careful not to drop the clay or set it on anything but the box in which it came. If you drop it even once, it is ruined. It may be a good idea to cut the clay in two pieces with a knife before getting it on the car. That way if something happens to one half you still have something to work with.

Bill hit the nail on the head with the Armor All. IMO that stuff is worthless at best. Vinylex and the other Lexol products are all good. Mother's Back to Black works well on new or new-condition tires. I'd just stick to the Vinylex though. When applying it to the dash or other surfaces, spray it on a rag first, then apply. If you spray it on the surface being treated there will be splatter marks on everything else. Save yourself the time and headache by just using a rag. Spread on and let dry for a "wet" look or apply and buff for more of a patina. Search the Detailing forum's archives/past posts for further detailing tips. If you need any help just post or email me.

Hope this helps...Lee
