Re Dying the Carpets
The rear part of my wagon is orange, use to be tobacco but is now just orange with the occasional random black spot here and there...
I did a search on dye and interior and came up with one member how re-dyed his car with a product called Plasti-coat. Did a web search and found the company, but I'm not sure they still make the product. I sent them an email. In the mean time I was wondering if anyone had re-dyed their carpets? If so when did you get the dye? Did it work? How much did it cost? Thanks... |

My Dad dyed the seat trim in my car. I protested on the grounds that it would rub off. It hasn't yet. It made a huge positive difference. Looks like brand new. I realize I should listen to my Dad more.
HOWEVER- as in anything, the prep work determines the outcome. You MUST be sure the carpet is clean and free of grease and oils, which means you probably had better pressure wash it or something. My Dad and I took the carpets out of my car and used some purple power or whatever and blasted 'em. Now that they are dry they look like brand new. That car was so greasy and nasty on the inside I never would have thought it would look like it does today. Just clean it real good, let it dry in the sun, take your time, do it right. Humidity- that will ruin the process, so avoid excessive humidity.

If you will do a search for Marhyde posts using my name you will find several good threads... not that I started them...
We are using ' dyed' loosely here... if you put a color on and you can not see the pores afterwards then you have painted it... you can't dye nylon, etc... it would have to be something like wool, mohair, cotton to dye it.. and would be more complicated than painting it... If you clean your carpet... let it dry.... and spray it with PlastiCote, Marhyde, Krylon plastic spray, etc... it should look like brand NEW.... I have also used these things on actual seats... like the entire interior of a Karman Ghia... changed the color from brown to silver... I too thought it would peel off after a while... but I was careful to clean with alcohol , rough up the surface with flint 100 grit sandpaper, and do a tack coat... then a gloss coat... I was thrilled with the longevity... It took three years for the usual spot.... on the edge of the drivers seat to wear through.... it did not peel... it wore ..... that stuff MELDS into the naugahyde seats... and does a pretty good job on leather ones... For real cleaning ... of oil and grease... Actual Trisodium Phosphate... ( be careful of imitators which are now using the old initials... TSP.... but do not put TSP into the box... |

I've used this carpet dye on a parcel shelf and it worked well.
http://www.vinylpro.com/ (half way down page, on the left) Get a shade darker than you want as it "enhances" the original color rather than covering it. It's a dye not a "paint". FWIW.

Wow...Lots of stuff...
I think this site has lots of interesting stuff. Can't really tell which color would best match tobacco interior, but the price is right.
I'm going to call them and see if they have matched MB interiors before.... |

I have used the navy blue interior dye/paint sold at walmart and other auto stores. It comes in a spray can and holds up very well.
I used it on an sl, as a last ditch effort. I wound up leaving it for all the years I owned it. Every few years I would re-do it due to the sun fading it when the top was down. I did the leather and carpets..

Carpet Dye go to . . .
Leatherique.com this site also makes leather dye to match your MB interior. I have used their products (oils) for leather restoration and they have been superb. Look under products and scroll down until you see carpet dye.

Here's the deal....
I called both leatherique and vinyl pro. Both make similair products, but leatherique has premixed the tobacco color. With vinyl pro you have to order the best guess, and they recommend going a couple of shades darker to get a better result.
Tobacco is a tough color to figure out a match on vinyl pro's website, so I'm going the order the product from leatherique. Since mine is a wagon I'm ordering the 32 oz size for 85.00. I'll let you know how it turns out. |
