My 83 300SD clear coat is peeling off in sheets. All panels. Roof and trunk worst. S. California sun, I guess. My question is: since I'm not now prepared to repaint the car or even sand off the remaining clear coat, is there something I can put over the finish to protect the paint and metal? Perhaps a polish or aftermarket sealant, etc? It'll likely be 12-18 months before significant work on the exterior.

Eric,
If your car is shedding paint then anything you put on will come off with the paint. Even after sanding or something similar you will not really gain anything by trying to apply something to prevent problems. Your best bet is to get the car repainted or at least re-clearcoated as soon as possible by a top notch body/paint shop. Once your car has been repainted you will want to wait about a month-6weeks before waxing. Sorry we can't offer you any better news. Lee |

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to find something to keep the paint on. But I'd rather have the facts than an empty hope.
