Any ideas on refinishing alloy wheels ? The protective film (or laquer ?) has worn or peeled off and is staining the bare metal. These are the older (pre 1985) style 14" alloys. Are there folks out there who are in the business of reconditioning ? |

Check with Robb Rice at Rennsport. They do top notch work at a very reasonable charge. My 1992 300CE wheels returned better than new. You may call them at 770 992-9442 or visit them on the Web at www.rennsport.com. Phil |

Rennsport is one of our MercedesShop sponsors. Their banner ad is at the bottom of our homepage. There's a featured article and tour through Rennsport in the Do It Yourself section of our site.

Rennsport is your best bet. He can recondition a set of wheels to literally better than factory for about the cost of buying one wheel new. The 500E's wheels may have a date with Rennsport sometime in the future... Most MB wheels Rennsport has in stock and can just do a core exchange for you.
Hope this helps...Lee |

Thanks, ya'll.
Got a quote from Rennsport already. $75 each + 12 shipping for each wheel. (to VA) This is for repainting, which includes repainting the caps. Very reasonable. Thanks !! |

Not to draw business away from a Mercedesshop sponsor, but Wurth Products has a kit for refinishing alloy rims. I did two sets of the old style MB alloys and they turned out absolutely gorgeous! I got my kit diretly from the Wurth distributor who visits our shop, but I see that Griot's Garage sells a kit of their own. It retails for $59.95, includes 35oz of their paint prep, can of zinc spray, 2 cans of silver alloy paint, and 2 cans of clear lacquer. The kit will refinish four wheels. Not too bad for the bucks! ------------------ Rgds, Aaron Greenberg MB technician '67 250SE Cabriolet '77 450SL '79 6.9 '79 6.9 '80 300SD '81 240D '85 380SE '89 420SEL '93 300E 2.8 |

I'm aware of those kits but the downside is that you must A) have the vehicle and wheels separate...and for best results tires/wheels separate. B) the finish that is aerosol sprayed on is not as longterm durable as the finish of a professional baked on finish. C) if there is any curb damage or abrasions in the metal the Wurth kits are not effective with those defects. D) if you choose to custom finish your wheels (say polished metal finish) the Wurth products cannot help you much. E) sometimes the Wurth stuff has trouble getting out the sand-paperish texture from the burned on brake dust
For a DIY or quick-n-dirty fix the Wurth products seem to work very well. The strength of Wurth is repainting, if there is anything more than just paint defects you need professional help. HOpe this helps...Lee |

One other comment I would add to Lee's is the the real secret to getting a top quality paint job is the surface prep PRIOR to painting. Rennsport, for example, will plastic bead blast and glass bead blast the surface prior to painting...at a minimum. If necessary, they will actually machine the surface to insure they have the perfect surface for paint to adhere to. Then they paint and then they bake on the paint in the drying oven.
That's why it's $75/wheel instead of $60 for the do it yourself kit. I have seen the kit Griot offers. For $60 it's not bad but, the paint job lasts no where near as long as Rennsport and can yellow and chip with time. If I had a second set of wheels for my snow tires I'd go the $60 route. ------------------ Bill Wood - Webmaster MercedesShop.com, LLC |
