Ack! It was raining the other day, so, obviously, I had to use my wiper. Well, yesterday, getting into my car, I noticed that the driver side windshield has a fine scratch/mark on the area where the tip of the wiper blade passes through. Looks like a little rock got between the rubber piece and the glass. I'm not sure if it is an etched mark or just sedimentary deposits. I've tried rubbing it off but with little results. I'm still not sure if it is a permenant scratch or not. How can I get rid of it, as it is somewhat visible and distracting.
Oh, also, is there anyway to get rid of windshield nicks caused by bouncing rocks on the freeway? Thanks. |

Cossie:
Try a product sold at your friendly local dealer, called, I believe, Glass Cleaner with Pumice. It's sitting in my garage, and I'm not there, so I can't check the exact name. It comes in a tube, like toothpaste, and goes a long way. Fold an old face cloth over a cut piece of 2x4 lumber, and "polish" the glass with the pumice stuff on the cloth. Use the 2x4, since it has rounded edges and won't abrade your washcloth. The 2x4 also allows you to put a wide, solid face on the glass, not your soft fingers which will conform to all the dips, etc. The local guys also use this to remove any rubber streaks leaft by the blades as they "scrape" over dry glass when you forget to use your washer feature of the wipers. But do not use this on paint, as the pumice will scratch..........Andras |

You can also try household "Bon Ami" or toothpaste (paste, not gel) for windshield treatments. As Andras noted, do NOT let these get on the paint. If the do, rinse thoroughly with water, then wash gently. A good time to do the windshield treatment is right before you wash the rest of the car. Clean the windshield with something like Windex, then do the BonAmi/Pumice/toothpaste treatment, then rinse/wash the car as normal. Following all that up you may want to try a windshield treatment like STP Vision Blade. I've used that before and it really seems to help night rain visibilty by cutting down on streaking and whatnot. Lasts about 4-6 months too which isn't bad for $20 or so bucks and 15 mins of labor.
Hope this helps...Lee |

I don't know if your local detailer does this but I read on some poster at the local Classic Car Wash and they said they fix cracked windshields and whatnot so you can give some of those kind of places a call.

Rub the backside of your thumbnail over the area of concern. If you feel any roughness as you pass over the "scratch", then it's "in" the glass, not "on" the glass. There are ways of compounding scratches out of windshields, also small dings as well, but these involve precision grinding of the glass surface with a special grinder and abrasives. Also, there is a limit to how much polishing can be done, as this literally removes part of the surface of the glass. It may produce visual distortion or excessive thinning of the outer plate. This is a job for a glass shop. You could rub until doomsday with cleaners and/or pumice and end up tired and dissatisfied. Check in at a local auto glass shop or do a search on the web under polishing glass.
