i tried out the zymol finally this weekend. however, it required several applications and a lot of agitation with a toothbrush to get the oil off. i was a little disappointed that was not more effective, but i guess 15+ years of grime are going to be harder to remove than i thought.

i will post pics soon.

It's on plastic & rubber surfaces, not vinyl. Also, my engine bay doesn't really get much exposure to the sun. Only think I would worry about is possible heat build up because of the silicone product insulating heat. Worst comes to worst, I'll replace the hoses if they show any signs of cracking. I need to do it eventually anyways.

that you should be concerned with, it's the O2 sensor. The silicone outgasses and will find its way into the engine and then to the O2 sensor. That msg is from Berryman, and they have nothing to gain by saying this. You have been warned.

Talking Engine Cleaning

I use a product called "Awesome". No bleach or acid, works great as an engine cleaner straight out of the bottle. You can cut it with some water for gen eral auto and household cleaning. $1.00 a bottle at the Dollar Tree store.

Degreaser

I used to use degreaser on my engines years ago, but then discovered they tend to cause the rubber to deteriorate. I haven't done this in quite a while. Are they safe to use now? I have Simple Green. Does that work pretty effectively on engine grease?

I like the idea of keeping everything under the hood clean, but don't want to cause damage needlessly.
