Stripping off Armor-All

Guy's,

What would you recommend to get armor-all (I think) off the dash of an ML?
I don't know how long the stuff has been on the truck but it has that unmistakable sheen of a silcone based product. I tried some Lexol leather cleaner and it didn't seem to take it off.

What can I use without damaging the dashboard?

Rgds, Ed

armorall

when i bought my 300se the dash was covered with armorall. i removed it using the magic eraser cleaning sponge by mr clean, it is a microfiber and uses only water as a cleaner. being microfiber it really gets in the pores of the material. it is available at most stores and very inexpensive.

armorall

my reason is it gives a really heavy glare when the sun hits the dash, imparing my vision at times.

Well, there is another reason. While giving that greasy shine, Armorall actually dries out the vinyl and leads to cracking. A non-silicone product should be used, and I recommend 303, as it also protects from UV rays with an SP40.

Thanks,
Richard

I heard ArmorAll protectant has poor durability. Its shine might disappear soon by itself, or applying any other protectant might simply remove ArmorAll. According to 303, alcohol is not safe cleaing agent for vinyl.

All other protectants (Vinylex, Mothers Preserves, most Meguiars products, ArmorAll, etc. contain silicones) are bad for vinyl , according to 303. But are there any other credible sources supporting this claim other than 303 web page?

How do we know that 303 Protectant has the BEST protection against UV?

Using alcohol, or any solvent for that matter, to clean the vinyl dash will be counterproductive as it will dry out any of the "oils" that were present in the original dash...which is what you're trying to avoid! Butyl solvents such as Formula 409, same thing. It's a solvent, too...just a water based one rather than a petroleum based. Better to just use the 303 or Mercedes product over it and do a good job of working it in. If you feel compelled to clean it with something, use good old H 2 0 and something very mild like Woolite.

FYI, I read somewhere, maybe on this site, that the MB car care products are actually made by Meguiars. My personal experience with Meguiars is that they are uniformly very good.

FWIW...
