instrument panel (spots)

89 300 CE

I don't know how it happened but all of a sudden I have spots on the inside of the plastic covering the main instrument panel. They look like the spots left on my outside finish after a rain. I did have a few coolant leak problems, now completely repaired, but I can't imagine that caused the problem. Maybe the spots have been there and I just noticed them as the sunshine returned to Boston. But this is my third summer with this car.

Anyway, do I have to get out my coat hanger hooks and pull the thing to clean it? Will it involve looosening the speedo, etc.? Any suggestions on how to get at the inside of that thing? Any ideas on where the spots came from?
thanks

Are you sure it is on the inside? The only reason I'm asking is because it's not fun removing the cluster. What's worse is trying the clean the plastic on the inside. Dust and everything in God's wonderful world sticks to it like a magnet. It can be done though. If you decide you want to do this, I will help you out. It will take me a few hours to put the information and pics together, but I have enough info to guide you step by step on how to do it. If you need it, it will be my pleasure to help you.

To answer some of your questions:

1. How it gone inside is the same as me questioning how there were 2 dead flies in my friend's 2004 Range Rover Headlight in a part that is completely sealed. These things are weird and we don't know why they happen.

2. To remove the cluster the coat hangers are one way of doing it.

3. You do have to loosen the speedo cable from underneath.

can do

Thanks Lino.
I've removed the instrument cluster before and know what a PIA it is. I'll wait for an empty afternoon and get at it. No need for the photos, etc. I can handle it. I just thought there might be a trick for getting at only the glass.
Maybe some of those cuties in your avatar can come to cheer me on!
