how to smooth out paint?

I am scrubbing up a '86 126 sedan... and the paint has tons of pitch/grime/grit stuck to it. what is the best way to lift/remove such gunk with out scratching the paint??

The car has been sitting for about 5 years w/ a car cover.... do car covers work? as the dust seems to have gone right through and settled on the paint.

washed it tonight, which helped, but there has got to be something else which will help...

I have used about every Clay bar sold, and they will work wonders on your paint.

I have found the best clay bar is sold by Zaino. You can buy them online if you do a search.

For clay bars sold retail, I like Clay Magic. Mothers also has a good bar.

I do not like the Meguiar's clay bar at all.
