Debadge or not? Poll w/ Pics
I'm debating debadging my 00 c230k sport. The car is black, and has no chrome except for the grille and all the lettering on the trunk.

Its actually not tinted. Just black on black so it give the appearance of being lightly tinted in some lighting conditions.
Here in NJ we cant tint the front door windows at all. We will fail inspection, and can be pulled over at any moment and given a $45 ticket for it. Since I cant tint the whole car, i just left it alone. As far as chrome wheels, they arent my thing. I'm not into the "bling" factor. :pukeface: George |
I personally think the rear end looks a lot less cluttered without the badging. Plus it is a real pain to clean and wax around and between the numbers. You can always paste them back on if you don't like it, though you do run the risk of getting that "eBay salvage title" look if they aren't placed perfectly.

Debadge it!
The rear looks a lot nicer without the badging, it also adds a little "suspense", because people won't know what model the car is. Sure MB fans know its's a C-Class W202, but what size motor? It is a custom built motor? Hmmm..? The "Kompressor" name is also too long to be on the rear, so my vote is to take it all off. |
debadging in my opinion is ricer............leave the tags on it.

I tend to think that cars without badges and original decals have been in a wreck. Might be an issue when you go to sell it, but if you're keeping it for a while, take em off.

Yes, it is option number 260 "elimination of type sign on trunk lid" and is quite common in Europe.
Personally I like the type badge removed, George. I've done it on my coupe and think it looks great. I guess it's a personal thing. |

First off, I must applaud you! You have great taste in MB's... the W202 is what i think to be the best modern MB made. I love every aspect of these cars. Love the W203 wheels on the C220! I am going to vote for a no on the debadge. I prefer to have the proper badging on my cars, and I like the extra touch of shine they add to the look of the rear of the car. Heres what I would do since you have a sport model w/o any chrome on the exterior other than badging and grille; replace the all silver center caps on your wheels with the newer style center caps that have a chrome star mounted on a silver cap. I did that with my C280 and it really looks sharp. Its all about the small little details! So I vote for you to keep the emblems and replace existing center caps with the newer style "chrome star on silver cap" center caps. |
I'd go with the debadging. I think it looks sharper. The three-pointed star in the centre of the trunk is all you really need, isn't it? I'm planning on painting my C280 this fall, and I'll be going with the debadged look along with removing the upright hood ornament in favour of just a flat badge in place.
A lot of people seem to go for this look because it is very clean. The way it all began is a very interesting study in human nature. The way I heard it, the phenomenon began in Germany, home of the Green laws that gave us biodegradable wiring harnesses on our M104s. People who bought the bigger, less environmentally responsible MBs and BMWs (V12s and V8s) would remove the badging to avoid the neighbors looking down on them as environmentally irresponsible. They hoped to pass the cars off as the more fuel efficient models and avoid the judgments. After that, people who bought the entry-level versions took the badges off to try and pass their cars off for the pricier V8s and V12s. These people would rather make the neighbors be jealous of the more expensive car than worry about them getting all sanctimonious about environmental responsibility. Well, I defintely want to get the flat hood badge as well, I ordered the s600 style avant garde grille, so I think that and the hood badge will clean up the nose nicely.
I really think im going to go for the debadged look.... it does look cleaner and sharper... Honestly I wouldnt mind the badging as much if the kompressor wasnt there. Do i really need a 12" neon sign advertising forced induction in german?? Even the americans (who are the king of superflouous badging) dont do that... hell their blown cars have a 2.5" supercharged badge. Take care, George |
