previous owner siliconed the sunroof shut. Now what?

The previous owner of my "diamond in the rough" '78 240D had the sunroof sealed with silicone because he thought it was leaking. Turns out, that's not the case at all, and now I'm stuck with silicone sealing my sunroof shut. What's the best way to get rid of this? I could use a razor blade, but I'm afraid I would cut through the seal that's supposed to be there.

He probably didn't clean things which will work to your advantage.

I would use a plastic squeegie to attempt removal. The fwd seal is pretty easy to replace - rest are a little more involved. They do not prevent all water intrusion, there are drains. They do minimize the noise.
You could carefully cut the silicone bead and then work to remove it from each side?

Take your time...

Fantastic idea. I was really not looking forward to using a razor blade. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Purchace a can of "key board cleaner". The kind that comes out cold - spray on the silicone (freeze it) and pop it off with a plastic impliment of your choosing. When it gets cold it shrinks and releases real well from metal.

Well, I used a plastic squeegie-like implement, and the sunroof works now, but some pieces of the original seal came out with it. It's supposed to rain this entire week starting tomorrow, so I'll see how that works out!
