How to paint hubcaps for 240D...

I bought a set of 4 silver (unpainted) hubcaps off ebay. My 240D is green and missing one hubcap. The dilemma is this: Do I replace my three green ones with four silver ones or get a silver one painted to match? Is there a stencil somewhere that the MB factories used?

What do you guys think?

There is a metal stencil but they're rare and are more of a collectors item than anything useful. Better off doing it with tape and a razorblade.

There is a MB stencil, rare and expensive. I did a reasonalbe job on mine by masking the whole thing with tape, then cutting out the waste with an Exacto knife. Time consuming, but not expensive.

I agree with the other two posters. Get some thin 3M tape from an auto parts store that also handles auto paint. It comes in varying widths, but it is perfect for this situation because it will show less of a line than the standard 3/4 inch masking tape. You can spray the body color right on the chrome or spray a very thin coat of epoxy paint on the chrome for adhesion before spraying the color coat. I did this on my 190SL almost 20 years ago and the hubcaps still look great. Time consuming, but rewarding.

Thanks a lot guys. I may actually attempt this. For now, I think I'll drive around with four chrome hubcaps while I work up my nerve...

Personally, I think the unpainted chrome hubcaps look quite nice.

Yeah, there is a metal stencil that covers the star and circle as well as a seperate one for the outside ring. I remember when I was a kid, thinking it was cool when my uncle would take them out to paint for customer's hubs. At that age I only thought you ordered the color hubs you wanted from the dealer.

The only thing I can add ,when I did mine a year or so ago is to use as little color paint after primer as you can and then use a clear coat. I also used a hair drier after each coat to speed drying time. But I did use too many coats of color and when removing tape a thick chip came off and I had to redo.
