Burnt/Smoke Smell from Vents

We had an issue that caused oil build-up in the catalytic converters anc caused the car to send great gobs of smoke in and around the car. We've repaired the car and most of the smoke smell has disipated (i'm sure the rest will go away once we give it a good cleaning this weekend).

However, we have a very strong burning smell (no smoke) coming from the vents when we turn on the ventilation system (with or without the ac on).

Any ideas on how to get that out and clean the vents? BTW, it's the E420 if that makes a diff.

The only thing I've heard about cleaning vent systems is to turn the car on, open the doors, turn the fan on its fastest speed, and open all the available vents (not sure how to do this on an E420) and empty most of a can of lysol (now available in scented versions =) into the vent intake (louvers in front of the windshield in my 240D....) Unloading even part of a can will take at least a couple minutes... Let the fan run on high for at least a couple more minutes to dissipate the smell. Open the doors to keep the stuff from congregating in your car. Sounds intuitive, "they" say it works, but since I've no way of actually testing the air quality, I cant say for sure. make me feel like I did something though =) Suuposedly Lysol is better at killing germs than other sprays...
