Smell coming from vents?

Dosnt smell like coolant (and their dosnt seem to be a leak anywhere)

smells like....old car.

anyone know any products or anything to fix this. It's gotten to where I cant turn my heat on without getting a headache from the smell.

I have seen mold in the vents from A/C moisture build up. It is possible this is your case.

I suppose as an option you could shove a few xmas tree air fresheners in the vents. ;)

there are several products you can run through the A/C intake by the windshield cowl that will kill bacteria and freshen your A/c vents. 1Z KlimaKleen sp? and I think Wurth makes a product as well. I have heard some people use Lysol with mixed results. If you goto www.autopia.com you can find more information on it.

do a search for `Clean 'N Coat` and BG Frigi-Fresh these products coat the evaporator.

Also try this for a week, for the last couple of miles before you park the car, just run the HVAC blower on high, no A/C no heat and then turn off the HVAC completely for a mile or so before parking.

Plugged condensation drain will promote fungus growth.

Ionizer

car Ionizer

Thanks whunter.

I'll add an ionizer to the "to buy list."

An Ionizer will not make it go away, it also will not get the air in the vents. I have one in my car and house they do not have fans and only charge the air around them, they do not kill mold or bacteria... A real Ozone machine is what would, but they are very expensive!!

This is what you need:

Wurth:

or

1Z:
http://www.drivewerks.com/catalog/shopcart/CARE/POR_CARE_einszt_pg19.htm

It will actually clean and remove whats causing those odors.

This has a fan, and is not high priced.

the problem though is most likely mold and bacteria in the A/C and heat vents... and an Ionizer is not able to kill, destroy, or even affect it. It merely charges air particles and attracts them to a grid. An ozone machine will kill it, an ionizer will not. The products suggested above for the climate control vents should do the trick;)

The drivewerks link points to the wrong product now. Search for "klima cleaner".

samiam44 12-27-2009 03:31 PM

you want evaporator cleaner- BG makes a commercial product which will foam up and then drain out the evap drain. Find it online at amazon.
Aluminum evaporator/heater cores are more prone to this as copper inhibits fungle growth.
