Polishing metallic paint

I recently bought an 81 300SD. The car has been repainted once before. The paint is dull and I am thinking about buying the Porter Cable polisher and having at it. Someone told me that you can't polish metallic paint because it will turn different colors or somthing. The paint color is 932 Lapis Blue. Any advice on this?

metallic paint

Actually, if you take a fast wheel to the paint it will create heat and in turn damage the flake in the paint that is suspended.I recommend a chemical pre-treat with a low speed orbital OR by hand and work on the auto in the shade and when the paint is cool to the touch. Let me know how it works out

Test polish a spot. If color comes off, then you may have problems. If no color comes off, then you have a layer of clear coat over the color coat that can be polished with no worries.
