Unfortunately, many owners never lift the carpets in the trunk to inspect the rubber "weep" drain plugs to make sure that they're not clogged. There's one in the spare tire "well" also.

The proper fix would be to clean the rust, stabilize with POR or equivalent and then repair the affected area, making sure to retain the drain.

Find the source of the leak...

...or you will be repairing the rust for nothing. My '85 300DT has/had three small leaks. One, a crack in the right taillight lens, was probably caused by the lens being 'tapped' in a parking lot. A second, smaller leak in the same lens has not yet been located. The third leak appears to be around the rear window. My mechanic suggests using a soft blade to carefully pull back the rubber window seal and inserting some silicone glue or other sealer.

A garden hose is a good tool, once you have the trunk empty, to play on the rear end of the car so you can find where the water is entering the trunk.

Good luck.
