Wax for harsh winters.

Hello,

I live in california but I do a lot of skiing (almost every weekend). And I wax and take care of my car. I wash it everytime I come back from a ski trip. I use Meguiar M2016 Polymer Sealant Wax because I though it would be one the best wax for the harsh winter.

But I have notice comming back from a recent ski trip after washing the car that there are noticiable contamination bonded to the side of my ML after washing the car completely. And it does not look like it have any wax left in this area. This is after 1 ski trip. two days in the snow. The hood if fine.

I would think a quality wax would be good for at least a few ski trips if I wash it every time I get back.

Am I using the wrong wax. Or that is just expected. Any recomendations.

I am using blue coral car wash. The should be o.k. should it not.

Try some Turtle Wax soap and use some Mother's.I always hand wax,but it sounds like you need a buffer.Try that.Keep us updated.

Try using a Meguiars wash since you are using a Meguiars wax.

blau, try Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash. Target sells it for $9.99 a gallon ... use the gallon container to refill the smaller bottle which is easier to handle. You also might want to try Meguiar's Gold Class Wax.

Thanks for all the suggestion. And I will use a different car wash and maybe try some of that spray one wax.

But, just to make my point. It is raining in the bay right now. My merkur which sits in the sun and rain all the time still beads up even though I have not waxed it for at least 6 months. But the ML does does not bead up and I can feel contamination on the side as I have described earlier, seem to me that I have no wax there. Of course I don't drive the Merkur in the snow.

Does the snow and mud really do that much to wax?

This weekend I think I will use some cleaner wax on the side of the ML to get some of the contamination off. Let see how the cleaner wax hold up after the next ski trip.

Last winter, I put TurtleWax Platinum Series Ultra Gloss Paste Wax. After 2~3 months in winter in MA and RI, USA, it still beaded water. I went to auto car wash (with blue coral option) several times during the winter.
My car is outside 24/7.

I used California Car Duster to wipe off snow on painted surface such as roof, hood, etc.

However, I am still looking for good wax for winter, because my white car collected small brown or black dots that were not removed by washing or Meguiars Quick Detailer.

This winter, I wanted to compare stain resistance of TurtleWax Platinum and Meguiars NXT, but I had no time to divide sections, etc. So I just put a coat of TurtleWax Paste on December 23, 2005.
It still beads water, but my white car already started to get small dots not removable by Quick Detailer spray or automatic car wash.

I personally don't like `cleaner wax` as a way to get paint smooth as glass.
I think better to buy CLEANER, plus POLISH then do your waxing afterwards.
Claying could be an option for the lower contaminated panel but try cleaner and polish first. Or just try polish then wax and see if that works.

I also don't see why you should change car wash detergent.

Sound strictly like a wax issue so maybe try a new wax.

If after trying the above and your wax isn't beading up nicely then try some Dawn dishwashing detergent as a one time car wash soap to try and remove all the old waxes and start anew with a good coat of polish then wax.

Snow and salt is harh and lots of detailers say in the winter apply an extra coat of wax on the lower doors and sills, and in the summer add an extra coat of wax on the upper flat panels to reduce sun damage.

I would wash it with dish washing soap.

Clay the car. Clay will remove contamination that is embedded in the surface. It does something that paint cleaners and polishes cannot do.

Put down a Polish

Put down a Wax/Sealant like Meguiars NXT or a straight sealant like Wolfgang or Klasse.

Take your time and do all these steps and I think you will be pleased with the results after a snow attack

1) Wash with a quality car wash
2) Clay (to remove surface contaminants) ... will give a silky-smooth finish. Try Meguiar's Quik Detailer as a lubricant for the clay cleaning bar.
3) Machine polish (to remove swirl marks and light scratches)
4) Wax

Essentially the process before was done befoe I went on two ski trips. Except I did not clayed. The machine polish removed all contamination already and I wax with Meguiar M2016 Polymer Sealant Wax. Howeve after two ski trip and two car wash it seem like I don't have any more wax on the side and is not beading up.

I am thinking the wax I am using is not sufficient or is something else happening? I not looking or shinnyness. I am looking for a protection wax. I could always use a shinnyness wax in the summer

My car lives outside in the horrible Melbourne rain and my wax seems to last a long time.
