How do I keep my wifes cats off of the cars without killing them?

I know that a number of places make pads that deliver a mild shock to cats when they jump on the pad area - maybe one for the hood, roof, and trunk lid? There are also ultrasonic and chemical odor devices at this link: http://www.improvementscatalog.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=380

We had a cat that used to jump on the car - knew he wasn't supposed to be there because any time someone went into the garage and he was on the car, he would take off like a ...scalded cat? ;) Before I could solve the problem, a coyote got him :( .

Let me know if any of the above work. (I also thought about grounding a charged model T coil against the car, but figured some morning I would forget about it and put myself into ventricular fib.)

good luck..if you catch the cat on the car take a squirt bottle and spray the cat with it..or put some catnip out so the cat will go to that and not the car.

wonder if you wax the car the cat would fall off???

sorry I have that problem to..but mine is a stray cat likes to sleep on my front windshield and hood..I think thats how my window got broken and why my wipers stopped working..

I have the same experience with all my cars. The problem, for us, is that the car is nice and warm when we put it in the garage. It's almost like cats have infra red vision and can spot where a nice place to nap could be...the hood.

What I always get is paw prints on the roof, then sliding paw prints down the windshield, and usually fur left behind on the hood.

From my experience, they seem to chose one place for a few weeks..usually a warm place. Give them another spot to sleep?

You can leave the car outside to cool off, after sunset..then put the cold car in the garage at night. Depends on your situation. It is a hassle, and you would have to start and stop your car when it's cold...just a thought.

Someone told my wife(city girl) to throw a bunch of large rubber snakes on the hood - on top - on the truck lid.
I sat back knowin' better(country boy).

She walked outside an hr. or so later and the cats were all sittin' on top of the car. I finally convinced her that cats DO kill snakes and that this experience was a big let down for them.

Short of death, I know of no way to keep them off/out of anything they're drawn to. I live in south Texas and have
noticed that once it gets hot, they have a tendency to stay outside and up on the roof or in a tree where they have a bit more breeze. Summer's on the way!

It's one of those things I guess you learn to live with. A neighbors cat has the ability to get in my garage after I pull in without tripping the auto reverse. I find the cat curled up on the hood almost every morning. Just be sure to leave the windows closed, minimize any chances of surprises in the interior :eek:.

Where's a moderator when you need one.

I knew a guy who didn't like the cats messing his front yard so hooked a motion sensor to his sprinklers. I also heard those ultrasonic dog barking stoppers bother cats (it doesn't affect their barking). You could, with a lot of wire, connect a motion sensor or a sensative car alarm to an ultrasonic widget or windsheild washer to keep them away.

Hi Benzmac. Infuriating problem, which I solved by using a car cover when I'm away from home. Also I have a product called Skunkshot. Not sure if you can purchase this in the USA, but it is a synthetic copy of the skunk's "aroma"!
Smear this on the underside of bumpers and mudguards (fenders). Your car won't smell too good from the outside, but it sure will keep the cats, and dogs, away.

I will not spray them because they scratch the hell out of the paint in their panic to get off of the car.
