Old Clear Coat

Sorry for the noob question - I just bought our '81 300SD from its original owner - she lived in a fairly dry climate and kept the car in a garage for all its life, so the body's in pretty good shape, but there are a few spots on and near the hood where the clear coat (I think they called it "PolyGlyCoat" back then) is peeling off, leaving the paint exposed. Is this something that can be fixed without sanding down and starting over? The rest of the body's in marvelous shape, hardly any scratches and still shiny - it's just these 3 or 4 spots near the front.

If the clear coat is peeling off it has to sanded down and recoated.

How big are the spots? I had 2 spots about 2 mm in diameter on my front fender that I just touched up with the MB touch up kit (includes bottle of paint and bottle of clear coat). It's lasted well and really blended well so you bairly see the edge of the factory coat.

I tried to cheap out on my 1985 500sel. I had a few clearcoat peeling and chipped areas from door dings ,etc,,thought I could get some paint and laquar from paintmatch.com and do a decent job. welll ,,,that turned out to be just a:thought". Paintmatch did a great job in color and the paint cans worked just fine,,However I could "see" every spot I worked on,,other ppl thought it was just fine,,,I ended up sanding the whole car down,filling,primering basecoat,clearcoating before I was done. Old beast shines like new now.As far as matching your paint and touchup goes,,It depends on what you can live with and how much money and time you are willing to spend. I spent close to $600 in paints and misc sanding stuff,however I already had the compressor,DA sanders and guns.
I consider the effort well spent as I plan on driving my "baby" a few more years.
