Cleaning floor mats
At home we have large, front loading washer.
The floor mats in my 300TE are nearlynew...but very dirty. Can I wash these in the washer? Has anyone done this (successfully). Thanks....

I suggest keeping your floor mats out of the washer. Try automotive carpet cleaner and a vacuum ... works well for me.

Wet them down, then spray with a carpet shampoo and powerwash. This is what the detailing shops do and works like a charm.

I mixed up a gallon of that Oxiclean stuff, wet them down, scrub brushed, and then took them to the car wash and power blasted the crud out. Layed them out on the hammock to dry..look new now.

water hose
I removed mine and hosed down with a garden hose used some bissel carpet cleaning stuff. Scrubbed with a brush then hang them up and hose them down till the water runs clear. Let them air dry for about a week or till completly dry. Works great.

Backs kind of crunchy
I have seen some car (carpet) mats that appeared to have recently been cleaned and the backing on them felt crunchy. So did the regular carpets. It felt as though there was some type of backing inside of it that was dry-rotted or something.
Is power washing carpets really safe? What about steam cleaning them like you do house carpets?

Mat cleaning.
Proper cleaning of floor mats is a must. Carpet holds more dust and dirt per square inch that any otherr fabric.
1) a throughly vacumn the mats take a brush and hit the back pf the mat to release stuck in soil. 2) pre spray with a good carpet cleaner and using a nail brush work in the cleaner to dislodge and loosen dirt. 3) I have two machines that will use a rinse and vacumn tool to purge and suck up the dirt. A Bezel or dirt devil can be purchased at your local sears that will be do the same. 4) Mercedes-Benz mats have a thin backing on the bottom and once wet this backing is distroyed and starts to peel off. 5) a coat of fabric protectant on the mats once dry will help keep the dirt from migrating futher down into the mat. 6) still better yet go to your local auto parts store and by a cheap set of clear mats to protect yours . Safe the mats for a hot date or a car show. Bob Geco Expert auto Care detailing since 1970 (310) 839-8337 |

My front grey mats were stained with brownish dirt. Washing in the bathtub with detergent did not work.
Having successfully used Woolite Oxy II (comes in two metal cans attached to one sprayer) on in-house carpet stains, I decided to try it on my mats. The stain is completely gone, and required no significant work. All I did was bring in the mats, vacuum front and back with my household vacuum cleaner, spayed on the Woolite, waited three minutes, blotted with a clean, white towel, and then let them dry in front of a fan. Also eliminates any odor.

Upholstery & mat cleaning tip!
Always vacuum first to remove loose graval . I am in the auto detail business now for some 35 years. I learned a lot since the the bucket and sponge bregade
Joined International carwash association and meet some educated people who knew how to clean an automobile . Then I got involved as a concours judge and learned more , know I read books and articles from 10 publications I receive and brush up on my skills to keep up with these new detailers who now nothing but quick work . Upholstery can be a delicate fabric or Leather and vinyl. Most of todays carpeting in automobiles with the exception of say Rolls Royce or MayBach are a poly blend. some are comed with the look of velour but most are a blended loop pile synthic. Through my years in business I have customers who wanted a quick service from the carwash to clean their floor mats and upholstery. What they got was this anology. You step into the shower to wash your hair. You lather up real good and then step out to towel dry your head of hair. What are we missing? We forgot to rinse the shampoo out !!! Sadly I get these customer wanting to save a buck and end up spending more to rinse and vacuum the soap in the mats and interior the detailer did not take out. If your going to clean your upholstery and floor mats buy a Bizel or the green machine there are many portable extraction machines a Sears and home Depot that will make your life much simpler and maintain the look and feel and smell of a new car. If you are having an auto appearance care specialist do the work for you ask him what his proceeder is . Better to have a perfessional do your work and give you tips than ruin a nice interior. I 2nd Zack's advice. I've used the pressure washer trick for years. Also, snow and some elbow grease will clean them up better than you think.
