Longer lasting: wax or sealant?
I’ve been using Meguiars Gold Class which gives a great looking shine but after a month or so it seems to wear off as water doesn’t bead like it used to. Last august I bought a car from a dealer that was probably detailed with some kind of paint sealant and it still beads water 9 months later. Do these synthetic sealants hold up that much longer than waxes? Is there a specific brand someone can recommend?

Durability is a pretty subjective thing, since it depends on the protectant, the paint, and the environment. I mostly use Meguiar's products, and the consensus seems to be that the sealants last longer than the waxes, but their #16 wax is a pretty long-lasting wax (3 months for me). Meguiars considers NXT to be their best-protecting sealant - I got about 5 months of beading the one time I used it, but many others have only gotten a month or two. I just started using the #21 polymer sealant, which seems to get the best raves about durability these days.

Meguiar's Gold Class was formulated to not be particularly long-lasting, but rather for making paint look good.
However, it was specifically formulated to not bead. Whether it beads or not is not an indicator of protection. The way they see it, if water beads, and if left to dry, it will leave mineral deposits on the paint. Their Polymer Sealant and NXT Tech wax are their longest lasting products. They are both polymer sealants, which provide better durability characteristics than carnuba products. To check and see if you still have protection, rub a towel back and forth across the paint. If it squeaks, it is time to wax.

EEK!!! make sure that towel is CLEAN, and that the car has been WASHED before you do that though! LOL
I find that Microfiber towels work best for removing cleaners, polish, and wax. They are softer and less streak prone than terry cloth towels, and other cotton loop towels. And the Meguairs Microfiber foam applicators are best for wax application.

Meg's NXT is not long lasting by any strech of the imagination. However, #21 does it for quite awhile, but #26 (A carnuba!) takes the cake. I know this because I did detailing for awhile. Used a ton of different waxes. Since I came back to detail the same car every month or two, I'd say I'm in good standing to claim one waxes longitivety over another. #26 turned out to last very long and looked great, so I just bought it by the gallon.

They call #21 a synthetic sealant and #26 a Hi-Tech wax. #26 is available in 16oz and 1 gallon bottles while #21 comes only in a 64oz bottle for some reason. Two 64oz #21 bottles costs more than twice one #26 gallon bottle. Does it mean #21 is better or lasts twice as long as #26?

I found that NuFinish lasts the longest, if you dont care about a high Gloss.
I wax my Mothers 126 once a year, so thats what she gets on hers. The Marauder gets waxed frequently, since its a garage queen/show car, so I use NXT since it shines so well. The suburban and F150 both get Nu FInish. Now that Rag Doll is painted, not sure what Im going to use on her. I heard Pig Snot is GREAT. Nate, I love your car! Rag Doll looks so much better but wont be at your level for a bit! Give me time I'm working on her

anyone use zymol products? They're a bit more expensive than Meguires or other products so I assume they're better - any experience??

I've used it, and I liked it, but I wish it lasted longer. I wasn't impressed with the durability of it, and it was a PITA to take off.
