How to wash imbedded soot off car's finish

I asked this before, but was hoping for a 2nd opinion. This is my first diesel, and when I first bought it, I used rubbing compound on the finish, washed it, and waxed it. The car was nice and shiny.

10,000 miles later, despite washings, there's that grey fog all over it. Someone previously said he used Simply Green. I thought that stuff might be a bit harsh to the paint. ... And maybe it's perfectly safe, I don't know. But I thought I'd ask for other suggestions.

A lot depends on the color of your car.............

I've used Zymol cleaner-wax with very good results. It's available, believe it or not, at Pep Boys.

Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get a white one afterall, huh? But the creme is still a very light color, the diesel mark shows up, just looks bad.

I have a white 300sd and it keeps the soot on it all the time. I will clean it with a little wax and it comes out just fine. It doesn't take too long to do. I would think that simple green would be fine as well. Just don't let it stay on the paint too long.

That zymol stuff works pretty dang good. It's freakin' expensive though.

Ive heard a lot about clay bar.
How does it work and how do you use it?
Is it hard to do?

It works by gliding a clump of fine-grained clay across the paint, which will catch on and remove surface contaminants. The difference in feel is immediately noticeable. It's not hard to do, but it can be time-consuming to do it properly.

Use bicycle cleaner

Go to a bicycle shop and get a can of bicycle cleaner..the water soluble citrus degreasers. These products work like majic. I use Pedros "Oranj Peelz Citrus Degreaser".

I'm pretty sure I read this online (recently) at the ROADANDTRACK.COM technical Q&A Section that the clay bars aren't actually made of clay but a petroleum base.
You'd think with all the different sellers of clay they'd use different base products, but maybe not.
