Refinish interior wood?
Has anyone refinished their interior wood in their W116 or 126 cars? Or any others for that matter?

i did it once with a 108.... the varnish dissolved off the wood with remover...then i put a gel stain on the wood...and they rubbed on minwax satin poly..
it looked great... the newer benzes seem to have some sort of epoxy poly...very protective but hard to re-finish.

Not sure what finish the W116 (I would guess the later style) has, but I know the W126, has the very tough epoxy type. It basically requires alot of sanding to get down to bare wood again. On the older wood (my W114 had the old style) you can use the removed chemicals.

I used a chemical stripper since sanding zebrano is just plain wrong.
Fingerprints everywhere, but I used a lighter stain because I wanted the zebrano to look more natural. |

you can do it with stripper, you will have to use a lot of it and do it several times to get down tot he wood, but this has been discussed before.
I have a can of some stuff I bought to play with and it worked well to strip it. I'll post up info when I get home and check the can. I know I got it at home depot and it was in a can with orange ont he label. Alon

This is an easy and quick job, no sanding required. I stripped the zebrano in my 300E using aerosol aircraft stripper from Home Depot (orange can). It was one of the first things I did when I got the car, since all the cracked finish bothered me to no end, kind of like a grain of sand on your eyeball. I didn't bother staining after stripping - just sprayed on about 3 or 4 coats of urethane. The result is a refreshingly bright, natural wood look. Passengers compliment me on it all the time. When I get the time, I will pull the wood strips in the doors and do them too so that they match.
