Engine Detailing

Good morning everyone. I just purchased a 1985 300D-t. 179,000 miles, and it is a cherry. One previous physician owner. I've always wanted to own this model and now I have it.

Question: I would like to detail the engine but I know you have to be careful to cover sensors, intake, etc. to ensure the engine does not become water logged. Can someone please provide me a procedure, recommend cleaning products, etc.?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I clean my engine compartment regurarly and thuroughly. the only REAL threat is getting the alternator wet.

but if your battery is good it shouldn't be too much worry. I just clean it at the car wash and use their engine cleaning setting..

***DO NOT GET THE HOOD PAD SOAKED*** it'll fall off with a few wettings.

if you want to do it at home, you could buy some good degreaser from a parts store that is NOT petroleum based. a foaming type is good.
get the engine warm but not hot, spray stuff and let it soak for a few minutes then rince with a strong stream of water, prefferably a pressure washer...

Hope that helps! I'm very happy with the way my engine looks it's nice to work on without having to wash my hands every 5 minutes.

Your diesel doesn't have much in the way of electronics to worry about. The air intake is the only think I cover.

Get a good long handled scrub brush and some good enigne degreaser and go to town - stay away from pressure washers. Pressure washers will invade electrical connections (and cause things like your parking lights to stay on ).
