DIY tinting tips

Has anyone had a go at DIY tinting?

I had a go a while ago - turned out fine on the back windows but when I attempted it on the front windows I gave up because the curve in the windows kept causing air bubbles.

Has anyone got any pointers or pictures ? The local Car store had a clearance sale and had film tint for 5 bucks a roll so it was too cheap to pass up. I thought why not have a go!

tinting is cheap enough now that there is no reason why you shouldn't pay to have it professionally done.

You can get a hole car done professionally for $100.

Tinting is not as easy as they make it look.

There's no WAY that $100 will get you a good tint job... They'd have to use cheap crap tint, and apply it very quickly, to only get $100 for it...

Around here, the going rate is $50 per window, WITH door panals/third brake lights removed... It's extreamly difficult to DIY...

It requires skill, just like painting your own car, but some like the $99 paint jobs. I have done my two glass storm doors with great sucess, soapy water, new squegee, but no way in the world would I tackle car windows!

Maybe up North - had my SDL completely done for $110 in Central TX with a 10 year warranty.

Here is also a good tutorial for DIY tint

Well, I now agree.

Had a second go, but to much of a challenge for me - I have little patience for things that stick to my hands!!

Never mind, I enjoyed the challenge and the tint was dirt cheap.

I got a local guy who can do mid range tint for 300 $NZ.

I have enough trouble getting my county tax sticker on my windshield. I'd never try putting tint on my windows!

Good luck!

I've done 3 vehicles with good success. The trick is to trim the film on the outside of the glass. Roll the window down and run the utility knife along the curved edge of the glass for pro-looking results. Or just buy the precut film from eBay - they sell it for just about any car. At that point it's practically peel n stick.
