How to treat lower cladding?

I just bought a 92 300E, black with grey lower cladding. Because the paint finish is quite badly swirled I plan to polish it out with my Porter Cable DA polisher. Is the lower cladding painted as well, or is the color impregnated in the plastic. Do I dare try to polish it or do i risk ruining the finish?

Painted, and prone to chipping at leading edges over the years.

Try Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax on the cladding ... works well for me.
