Faded Door Handles, Bumper Winshield Wiper Arms

Hi - I have faded door handles, side mirror housings, bumpers and windshield wiper arms. Any suggestions on paint? Would satin black be best? I am running a 1986 300e that is the gold color but trim all is faded and looks like C___! Thanks

Looks for flexible "bumper" paint. Wurth made a black "flexible" paint

Are you talking about the synthetic, plastic material that turns gray after awhile? Bill Morrow, who is most often on the Diesel section showed me some stuff he uses that really brings that back to life. He just put some on a cloth and rubbed it in. I forget what it was now, but I'm sure he could tell you.

Back to Black works fairly well and has decent longevity.

I have painted the lower portion on my 1988 260e with black spray plastic paint. I have painted the bumpers with it as well.

i use Forever Black on everything else. It works great.

metal wiper arms

I have painted my faded metal wiper arms of previous cars, and this one, with the High Heat black paint, (for BBQ grills and so forth) It works pretty good on the metal. As for the rubber and plastic I am open to new ideas.....

Second the motion for Forever Black...only stuff with dye and no silicone-really lasts.

Boot polish

For rubber and plastic use ordinary black boot polish. Apply with a cloth or brush, then buff with a clean cloth. Gives a nice, even black finish with a slight sheen. Easy to apply - it wipes right off paintwork etc.

It will last for months, it's quick and easy to re-do whenever you clean the car.

It won't work on metal though.

Peanut butter is supposed to work well also.

(yes, I'm serious - do a search)

peanut butter does work on plastic, however it lasts only a month or so.

What is it, the oil that brings back the black to rubber and plastic? If that's the case, maybe other types of vegetable oil would also work. Please, try to avoid oils with trans fats, though.

So I happened to have an "aged" teaspoon of PB sitting on my frig from some mouse trapping.... workin' on my "new" diesel, hood's up, and there sits the faded wiper cover, so I tried it.... YUP it works. ... next I'll try the oil that separates out from the natural PB we prefer.

I used a viny/rubber dressing on some, and i swear the PB works better. I'll try pure peanut oil next.

I've heard of using vaseline. Lightly coat the door handle, wrap in saran wrap and let it "sweat in the sun" for a bit, remove the wrap and buff lightly.

Never tried it myself.

a heavy coat of mcguiers "back to black" a HEAVY coat, along with a version of the vasoline without the greasy after taste, dont wrap'em,just let it sit overnight after a long day in the sun, will open the pores and allow it to soak up the b2b and another heavy coat to sit over night,in the morn, clean off excess, for extra gloss,a tire "GEL", NOT TIRE SHINE OR SPRAYS,just enough to coat it and then buff excess off. its cleaner and easier than the vaso. method, and if you do it just like i wrote youll get it as close as its gonna get.mine are 22 yrs old and i recently did that and was well pleased.also, for mirror backs,,,,,use mcguiers paintcleaner in combo with baking soda and mix in enough to make the 2 like a thick paste. give it a goood coating and let sit for 2-3 minutes to "harden", buff as gently or rough as necessary, you should see the fading dissapear as you buff it off,if neccessary, repeat. after, you can buff with an orbital buffer with wax just like you would when doing a paint wax. without a buffer you can only go so far with it. but with patience and a buffer you will be impressed.
