Interior door panel repairs

Thanks to a PO, and a total lack of water shields, I have four fouled, warped door panels. The vinyl coverings, however, are still in great shape.

Now, maybe this is crazy, but I suspect my chances of finding four used panels in prime condition is probably rather unlikely. With that in mind, I paid particularly close attention to the construction of the panels as I was removing them. The water-damaged part seems to be similar to Masonite, or tempered hardboard, and that makes me wonder if it's possible to simply disassemble the panel assembly and replace only the rotten board with fresh material.

Has anyone attempted this?

The next time I find a W123 with beat up door panels in the salvage yard, I'll poke around with one and see if I can get one apart without mangling the vinyl or metal components. In the meantime, I'm going to just Lysol the crap out of my existing panels and keep using them. Unless, of course, someone wants to tell me that this can be done. Also, if anyone is interested, I can keep a camera handy. Maybe I'm not the only one with an interest in this.
