Smile interior cleaning

I just cleaned my 1985 300TD's interior carpeting. I used Bissel Fiber Cleansing Formula that I got from Walmart for $10 (I think). I put this in my home carpet cleaning machine and the carpets came out bright and like new!

rug doctor

I rent the rug doctor units from the grocery store, Lowes, etc

For $20 you get the main unit, and for another $3 you get the upholstery attachment which is hand held and works perfect for this.

Be carefull on the chemical you use, I would only use somehting very weak. You might just try a very mild soap and hot water at first.....

I have ruined a carpet on an Accord once, the chemical brought out a dark brown stain I couldn't get rid of. It kind of has done it to my Windstar but I have to clean that 'sum *****' every 6 months due to the milk spills, juice, ice cream, etc.. choose your poison..

I cleaned the carpets on both cars yesterday

And were they filthy. I never thought they would clean up, and now, yes they are old and the backing is beat up and they show wear, but they have a beautiful color and are sparkling clean. Here is what I did. I removed all the carpets from both cars. The 85 has the very blond almost white carpet. It had grease, wine, catsup and just awful looking stains all over. The palamino looked like a mechanic got in and out of the car on a long term basis with a lot of shop grease on his shoes. So, one at a time, I laid them on our deck table and gave them a good spraying of Westley's "Bleche-White" Tire Cleaner. Then with a scrub brush, I continued scrubbing with a mixture of "Simple Green" and store bought rug cleaner. And it didn't take much scrubbing, either. After I had all surfaces scrubbed, I laid them on the driveway. We have quite adequate, but not really high pressure here on metro water system. So with the hose and a good nozzle setting I rinsed them off very well. After getting most of the detergent off, I found that by hanging the carpet over the back of a lawn chair, really helped with the rinse. I could not believe the amount of dirt that came out of those carpets. I now have them still drying. I imagine that it will take a couple of days to completely dry up. But they are really beautiful!

I cheated and got them cleaned when my wife had the carpets steam cleaned in the house. Yanked them out of the car and the guy cleaned them for an additional $5/carpet. Made a really big difference.

A fantastic cleaner for organic stains is Nature's Miracle, found in pet stores. That stuff is worth it's weight in gold.

Amen to Nature's Miracle. I work for a company that packages their product. Not only is it great for old stains, but better yet, keep a package handy to put on those ice cream, milk and juice stains when they happen.

How'd you arrive at that combination of cleaners?

One of the key ingredients for cleaning, taught to me by my detailing shop, is water. Water is the safest and most effective solvent. Buy a pressure washer that has a high GPM rating. Your don't want one of the elcheapo brands that advertise 8000 PSI or anything like that. The GPM is what cleans.

Dawn and Woolite

The carpeting in my 1985 300D was in generally good condition when I purchased it, but suffered from general neglect including ground-in grease, dirt and sand. I cleaned the carpets in two stages. First I used Dawn dishing washing detergent to remove grease and organic soils. I laid the carpet sections on a large flat table outside and completed wetted them with a garden hose. I then applied Dawn full strength and gently scrubbed the pile with my fingers to minimize creating fuss. A significant amount of black crud foamed out during this process and I rinsed and scrubbed several times until all the foam was out.

Next I used Woolite to condition the fibers and freshen the smell. I applied Woolite directly, scrubbed with my fingers and flushed until no residual foam. I repeated this process twice. By the second application, the foam remained white and the carpets looked and smelled completed new...I was frankly amazed that they looked so good for 22 year old neglected rugs!

The last step was the most difficult. Despite that the carpets were clean on the surface, buried deep within the pile adjacent to the backing material was a build-up of grit and sand. I used a combination of compressed air to "open" the piling and a shop vacuum to suck up the particles as they were dislodged by the compressed air jet. I moved back and forth across the piles with the compressed air gun angled into the piles and directly adjacent to the vacuum pick-up. This process effectively removed every trace of sand that was embedded deep in the pile and also helped dry the carpet.

Lastly, I hung the carpet pieces on a clothes lines for a full day in the sun. The end result was "like new" carpet and despite the effort, I was very satisfied with the results.

The best way to clean an interior?

Is to hire a professional. Don't use lots of water and especially with a power washer as someone advised. You'll have a musty wet dog smell in no time.

Regards,

Randy Kasal
