Question 1983 300D How to remove the wood panel around the shifter?

Folks, in preparation for installation of my new head unit,(and because I would like to replace the shifter light bulb and fix my hazard switch) I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me how to remove the wood panel around the shifter, as well as how do I remove the shifter knob? Does it unscrew, or is it held in with a bolt or something? I understand that I need to remove the ash tray, then I should be able to see some screws to remove, but that's all I know. This is on my 1983 300D (affectionately known as Hans)Your help is GREATLY appreciated, thanks so much!
