Vacuum door lock on 83, 300D

a rear door lock stopped locking with key in driver's door, though all the other locks continued to work. I removed inside panel on the rear door and found 2 small (1/4 inch long, thinner than wire on paperclip) pieces of metal stuck in door liner. They appear to have been 2 small springs that attach to top of locking rod (in the slider) just below the door lock button.
Since having removed the rear door panel (and testing vacuum element which i believe is ok), the door locks and unlocks. It has been working. What are these 2 springs for (they are still in place in the other rear door.
thanks
