Question Car cover (really nice one) that is dirty. How to clean it?

In the trunk, I have a beautiful, expensive Kimberly - Clark custom designed and fitted SEC car cover, (even has "ears" for the outside mirrors) but it has not been used for several (about 4-5) years and is rather dirty.

Can this be cleaned in the large washing machine at the local laundromat?

Would you use hot or cold water, and how much detergent (if any)?

Would you put it in the dryer afterwards? I can't find any instructions around for it.

Thanks.

Hello,
I've read that if you have a really nice cover, at least 3-ply, that it can be washed in cold water on the gentle cycle in a washing machine [so as not to shrink]. It did not mention detergent, but I would think some soft fabric cleaner could be used, perhaps something like ALL, which is used for baby clothes. It was recommended to be dried in fresh air on a relatively warm, sunny day, but not with too much humidity [perhaps on a clothes line or other avenue where the cover can completely be stretched out so no pockets of wetness remain].
Hope that helps some.

I wouldn't use the fabric softeners for the same reason you should not use them in your polishing cloths. The fabric softener can scratch the paint and take the wax off the surface of the car over time.

We are assuming the car cover is dirty just on the outside yes? If so, turn it inside-out, put it on the clean car, and wash it as you would the car. Remove it after it has dried.

Take it to a laundromat, put it in a larger front-load machine, add a little (about 1/4 cup) laundry detergent and use cold or warm water. Air/sun dry.
What have you got to lose? Worst-case: it comes apart or otherwise wrecks, in which case you can't use it, just like now. Best case: it comes out clean and you're back in business for about $2 plus your time.

Some laundramats won't let you put big, bulky stuff like that in their washers. If it gets off center, it'll do a job of the machine.

My car cover instructions say to wash it in a machine using only cold water, that any chemicals, detergents or softeners are harmful. Good luck.

I need to get Max a nice cover. He's been wearing an ugly green tarp for the last few weeks. My neighbors would probably appreciate something a little more upscale, too.

How'd your cover come out, Jim? Did you wash it?
