Window tinting

I have seen window tinting applied on the inside and the outside of different cars. What is the industry standard or correct. I will be looking for a 3-M installer this spring. Dennis

All I've ever seen was installed on the inside.

I can believe that you have seen tint applied to the outside of the glass. Please believe, that is not the correct way to apply.

I agree, the inside application is correct. I did see it applied to the outside of Tony Stuart's (NASCAR driver) Lomborgini by Unique Auto in NY. It was on TV. Dennis

it is applied on the out side to cut the film then is transfered to the inside after the window is properly cleaned. The inside is the correct way. also there is a tint called ceramic this tint will last the life of the vehicle and never need to be taken out. cheaper films tend to turn purple on you over time and can also interfer with the antenna if it is in the window. there are 3 types of films dyed films(really cheap) metalic Films(better but interfer with antenna) and then ceramic( will last the life of the vehicle. use what you can afford but stick with a better grade.

BITT,
What else can you tell me about the ceramic film? Is it available by 3M? Really appreciate the info. BTW, it will be used on my '01 E-320 wagon.

Does the type of film make any difference in terms of the difficulty of application? I have to replace some of mine put on poorly by the PO. It is probably the cheap stuff.

The better the film is, the less it will scratch while installing it.

Wink

I am glad I saw this post as I too must get on my old tint and remove replace. The tint is 12% and illegal in texas certainly, but not in Hawaii where we are from. I have been getting over the inspections by either a bribe for the sticker, or pimping out the G/F in shorts and a halter do get the inspection...LOL..

Its time to do the right thing!

Denatured Alcohol will make tint removal much easier. It breaks down the adhesive layer very quickly. It's the safest way to remove film from exposed rear defroster lines. Wear gloves, and have good ventilation. Cut a plastic bag to the size of the window and place paper towels or terry towels wet with the alcohol on the window with the plastic taped in place to keep the alcohol from evaporating. Check the film every 5 minutes by pulling the edge. If the film layer separates from the adhesive layer, soak it longer. If you peel the film off and leave the adhesive layer behind, you will have a time-consuming and messy job ahead. Use drop cloths so you don't drip on the interior.

I had my SDL tinted in Texas to legal maximums BUT it wasn't legal in Mississippi. So had my optometrist write me an Rx for window tint and got an exception from DMV.

I had that happen once. That's a great idea, TX. I'll have to remember that if I run into that problem again. There is just so much creative energy on this forum!

Always question authority.....and read the entire regulation. TX has the same exemption for medical purposes. My OD didn't even question it - just smirked.

I only discovered I had violated the law when I got stopped for it. Never even thought to check. I hate when that happens. It's nice to know there;s a remedy.
