Removing Tar from Leather Seat - Help!
 

I somehow got tar on my pants and sat on my leather seat. The tar left several black marks that are a bit sticky. How can I safely remove the stain and not hurt the leather? I didn't want to try anything until I got some input.

I would have thought to clean it first with some tar remover, and then to clean the leather seats to even the clean spot with the rest, and then apply the leather conditioner/cream.

Try a little vasaline, then clean the area with soap and water.

After cleaning the area with soap and water, then creaming the leather? Otherwise the soap would strip the leather of its essential oils.

And DO NOT use Lexol leather cleaner!!

I Would Try This...
 

First, a call to George Pavlisko at Leatherique as suggested would be a good idea.

Not having done so, I would start with some naptha (lighter fluid) applied to a cloth, and try to pick and wipe back against the spot to remove the tar without spreading it around. The naptha is a petroleum distillate so it should work as a solvent for the tar without adding the oils that are in tar & bug removers (designed for exterior, not interior use). Once you have the majority of it removed, then use more naptha to remove the last bit of residue, then some saddle soap or proper leather cleaner, followed by an application of your favorite leather dressing/preservative.

Believe it or not, my dealer got it out using some general purpose cleaner! But thanks for all the tips!
