Stuck Car Seats
What would be the best thing to use on the seat rails for an 87' 560 SL. The manual seat gets stuck and i end up having to tug and pull to get them to move. White grease, sewing machine oil, WD 40, MD 20/20? Thanks for your help in advance.

Hello Siduri,
I've had good luck with WD40. The trick is to spray at the right parts. See where the track slides on top of each other. You might want to take the seats out, flip them over and lube them nicely from there. I lubricated my seats when I added "new" pads to them (new meaning used from the parts yard ).

With power seats is their an electrical connection to unplug when removing the seats? I haven't looked yet, but was thinking of taking mine out to redye them. I would grease the rails while I had them out, too.

Kneel on the ground so you can see on the seat and zap the rails and latch with WD40.
The have someone light sit in the seat and someone more beefy clamber in behind it. Person in seat tries to move it forward, beefy person gives a huge heave with their legs on the base of the seat. JUST ENSURE THE LATCH ACTUALLY RELEASES BEFORE YOU TRY THIS. Once it is free lube with a heavier duty spray such as a silicon lube or Fluid Film. Just did this to our "new" 82 380SL - driver's seat was stuck at the back of the tracks. Worked a charm. |

While you're at it, count how much change you'll get. Mine wasn't much Spraying the seat rails with the seats in the car is fine, I've done that before, but the plastic covers by the side hinder you from being able to spray into the insides of the track, which can be accessed somewhat from behind, but are easily accessible with the whole seats out. That way you can also see where the tracks rest, if the manual lever "teeth" have any obstructions, and if you have any broken springs you can repair with them out.

I used WD-40 (a lot of it!) but I had taken the seats out to replace broken springs so everything was apart. In the upside down position, I recovered about $5 in change. Looks like dimes are the real culprit. They seem to be just the right size to get in the track and block the metal roller assembly.
